Life is a marathon, not a sprint–and HS teachers and GCs are not the best fortunetellers

Allenna, so proud of you!!

allena -

You have no idea how many parents you’ve given hope to!

Congratulations on your successes.

allena, keep up the good work! Your story is very encouraging!!! I also know of someone who attended a cc for 2 yrs. because of a high school GPA lower than yours and will be transferring to UCLA this fall - premed. His HS English teacher cried when she found out…I’m not kidding.

I’m a senior at public, and well accalimed high school. I have a 3.3 weighted. 1890/2400, 1230/1600 SAT. I’ve run indoor track for three years, and outdoor track for 4. I’ve worked at a summer camp, for a few summers in a row. I have a moderate amount of ECs, and my greatest strength is my creative writing. My top choices for schools are UNC-Asheville, Rollins, Eckerd, and College of Charleston. What do you guys think about my chances of getting into these schools?

I would post this in the 3.0-3.3.

svidrigailov, I think your chances are good for all. They all seem like matches to me.

I’m thinking that we should have some new posting on here from the kids that have already heard this year!!! Where are you?

This is from an older student but it may help keep the thread visible.

Our daughter graduate HS in 2006 with barely a 3.0 GPA and around ~1150/1600 SATs. She did have 3 AP courses in her transcript reasonable extracurriculars. She was accepted at several schools in the area and chose (at the last minute) the University of Delaware. She is scheduled to graduate with honors and six months ahead of schedule.

Congratulations to your daughter on her upcoming graduation. Unfortunately, admissions have become more competitive every year. A 2010 HS grad with those stats would probably not get into U of Delaware. This is a shame because these students are being shut out of many great schools because admission has gotten so much more competitive.

My S was admitted last week to Northern Arizona Unversity with a 2.9 gpa, and they never asked for his test scores. Not his top choice but at least he’s going somewhere! We are still waiting to see about 12 other applications.

michone,

You are absolutely right. The school goes to great lengths to publicise and compare stats from the current class with those of previous classes.

For a long time I heard in our local school district that a class a few years behind out daughter’s was the largest in school history and after that the number of students would be coming down slowly.

Does anybody knows if that was a national trend and whether the 2010 HS class is the largest?

My understanding has been that the class of '08 was the largest in history, with this year a close second (of course my D is '08, my son is '10).

Really? I thought 2009 was the largest.

QM, that’s what I’ve heard too. This senior class is the first one in a while to be smaller than the one before. But I don’t think the difference is significant–we can still expect the class of 2009 admissions crunch to apply to us.

My son had an unweighted 3.1 (although did show pattern of improvement), with 1860 SATs, 680 Math SAT IIC and 2 APs, class of '09. He went to a very competetive, nationally ranked public high school in NYC (this may have carried some weight at some schools, but I don’t really know for sure 1 way or another). School doesn’t rank or weigh.

Accepted - UDel, UConn, UMass, Syracuse, SUNY Albany, Ursinus (w/ merit), Allegheny (w/ merit).
Denied - Penn State/UP and Bing
Wait Listed - Muhlenberg and U VT (although showed little interest - no visit, no interview)
Attending - UDel and couldn’t be happier.

My son had about 3.2 (unweighted; all grades were at community college), 2140 SATs, 3 APs all self-studied, NMS semifinalist.

Accepted- Kalamazoo (merit$$$), Beloit (merit$)
Denied- nowhere, after the two early acceptances he decided he was done

Congrats Handemom and Fang.

Handemom - - sent you a PM (about NYC schools).

My middle son had about a 3.36 unweighted average. He graduated from high school in 2007.
He got in to Michigan State, Indiana, George Mason, University of Pittsburg, Lafayette, Muhlenberg, University of Arizona, Arizona State, University of Colorado, and University of Denver.

He attends the University of Denver and loves it there.

S just received acceptance at Drexel (5 year coop program, business)
Stats: 3.0 UW, 3.3W, 26 ACT , minor EC’s, good summer work record
