Hispanic male attending NYU's Stern School of Business. Predict to graduate with about a 3.2 GPA, good EC's/leadership positions, and an internship under my belt in finance. I was wondering, my dream has always been iBanking, but is that out of my league with this GPA? Also, are there other high paying careers that I can feasibly get in to? I was thinking maybe something like Private Equity, Hedge Funds, Producing, or Corporate Real Estate, but wasn't sure if I made the cut? How much do these pay? How hard are they to obtain?

Other things: Although I know that I will probably initially work in NYC, I REALLY want to move back to Los Angeles.

What if it wasn't a BB? I can definitely do other brackets and boutiques for banking. Is there some department I do not know about that I belong in? Can I get into a smaller bank with that GPA? Can I feasibly relocate to LA after being in NYC for so long? Are there other similar jobs I would be a competitive applicant for? I know I sound like a *****show, but I feel like this is my last actual push before I seriously focus on ONE career. Thank you in advance.

or maybe to the finance department of a major company?

Your profile sounds pretty solid. Although your GPA is a bit on the weaker side, it definitely isn’t horrible, and you should push really hard to get it up to at least a 3.3 (rounded or not) to be above a few of the hard cutoffs. Beyond that, I would definitely target BBs all the way down the chain to boutiques in IB - you’ve got a shot, especially since you are attending a strong semi-target - use your network.

Beyond IB, you can look into corp development as well, if that is something of interest to you, but I wouldn’t put my faith in P/E or HF since they are often more difficult to break into than IB and more competitive (at least for any of the halfway decent and better shops).

PM me if you have any other questions.

IBanker

thank you! I was wondering, does URM status help at all? Next year I will be applying to the SEO program, and I know that helps if one is accepted, but if I wasn’t, does being Hispanic play a factor at all?

^ I would actually like to know the answer to that question as well. I would hope that affirmative action doesn’t apply to IB recruitment.

to answer the above question, kinda, I am not sure if it will get you interviews BECAUSE you are a URM, but I do know that there are programs for us like SEO that help us in getting jobs and stuff like that. I would love if URM played a factor, however. hahahaha. I will take any leg up I can get. Would it help for On campus recruitment or junior summer internships?
