FWIW, my D and 2 friends with 800's in SAT I Verbal, but mid-600's in SAT I Math, got into HYP. None of them had super-high SAT II scores, either. Their interests range from writing to science. We never thought it was necessary to micro-analyze the selectivity categories when choosing schools to which to apply. They were all #1 or #2 in class rank, & had major e.c. accomplishments in several areas. They are all very intellectually-oriented with a sophisticated level of literacy & reading preferences.

We're talking about lopsided SAT's, correct? I think edad has already pointed out that such cases may reveal a special ability. It's possible to be an especially talented mathematical thinker or a gifted writer...but perhaps not both at once. So we may not be talking about a kid in the bottom quartile struggling to keep up with his intellectual betters as much as a kid at the top of his class in his particular area of strength.

Well said, shoshi. I feel like this thread has been derailed.

S2 got 800's on his Math SATs but only scores in the 600s on reading and writing. The problem is, he's a BWRK/jock, with no detectable interest in math-oriented fields like engineering or science. I have no idea how the schools he's applied to will view that, or for that matter, the more important question of what field of study will end up grabbing his interest once he is there. He's only applied to megaversities, so I figure he'll be able to find something that works for him wherever he ends up.

at UCSB, when giving points for SAT, they count the verbal as 2/3 and math as 1/3. the engineering school there counts math as 2/3 and verbal as 1/3. Because my math is better than verbal, i am applying there as a mechanical engineering major...

kluge, it would seem that our sons are cut from the same mold (on another thread, I mentioned his involvement in baseball and track). He too is uninterested in math/science and is attracted to "megaversities" so please let me know where you sign winds up and how it's going!

whoops; "you sign" should have said "your son"

If any of you with High Verbal + Low Math kids have any experience with NLD, I'd like to hear from you by PM.

What is NLD? I have a daughter who fits the high verbal, low math profile.

shoshi, I just sent you a PM about that!
