haha flopsy you're always so funny.. and I LOVE that face you post everywhere LOL!!! <3

Well, is there anywhere that UCLA is held in higher regard than Berkley?

Doubtful. /shrug

haha I thought this thread was going to be something like "Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego"

I already got that one covered. Pfft.

Berkeley is better. You can't beat what has been ranked as the #1 Public university IN THE WORLD!!! And what's with the 'wow' factor? Go somewhere bc you want to, not bc of what other people think of it.

UCLA will soon be #1. sekushii + atama ga ii = saikyou no daigaku

vc08,

It doesn't take much to be the best public university in the world. The competition's pretty thin. Berkeley and UCLA are incredible because they're amongst the top universities in the world, public or private.

in california i feel like all uc's are "wow" and berkeley and ucla are "WOW". everyone ive told has been really, really impressed by ucla. berk and la are definitley prestigious in ca

Actually, fastMEd, Berkeley is the fastest rising university in the world, rankings-wise. UCLA is awesome too, there is no dispute. Someone earlier just asked which one was better, so I told them Berkeley, bc it is ranked higher pretty much everywhere. IT HAS MORE #1 RANKED DEPARTMENTS THAN ANY OTHER SCHOOL IN THE COUNTRY. That includes UCLA, MIT, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Caltech, etc. Get my point now?

I thought UMich does????? or is that in top 10?

sorry, does what?

UCLA received the most applicants than any other UC school.....UCLA is becoming more popular and more popular not just in Asia but in California as well.

I don't think Berkeley or UCLA is a "true wow" university. When I think that I think ivies/service academies/a few other top 10's. They are good schools no doubt, but they aren't HYPS.

true, they're better. jk. it depends on what you want. if you want to go to a school that only accepts 8%, go to HYPS. If you wanna go somewhere that has more top ranked programs than any of those, go to berkeley. UCLA isn't far behind.

I have to agree with LaxAttack, unfortunately.

UCLA and Cal, at least in the US, don't get the jaw drop that their Ivy equivalents get.

some people just have to have an east coast designer label. I had a good friend turn down a Regents at UCLA to pay full tuition at Wash U. go figure

The Wow factor:

Sweden: my friend from Sweden said that UCLA is a very big name there.
Malaysia: my friend from there also said the same thing.
Taiwan: my friend from there also said the same thing.
Australia: my cousin said he has heard many things about UCLA.

I befriended an Australian EAP student in the Engineering dept. He is thoroughly impressed with his department's talented pool of students and faculty. He believes that he has learned so much that when he goes back to his 'uni' he will have advantage in so far as his research and other things are concerned.

He also mentioned that we are very lucky to have professors like Terence Tao. He has potential equal to Einstein.

From a personal perspective, the English dept. also boasts some world renowned professors. Take Anne Mellor for instance, her research in Romantic writers/era are now taken in consideration. She contends that the Romantic era started years before the English canon usually use. Her own research is now referenced by other Romantic professors. Another professor in the department is Braunmuller - I have not taken his class, yet, but from what other students are telling me he is the perfect Shakespeare professor. He edits quite a bit of the Shakespeare books circulating these days.

I am sure others can speak from their own experience.

You must also take in consideration that UCLA and other 'prestigious' UCs are all public school. For them to keep up with the privates, in so far as finacial and administrative flexibility, it's amazing to say that UCLA and CAL are even better than private 'wow' institutions in certain programs.

bump.............:)
