Well I was seraching for villanova on the ranking lists and i couldnt see it anywhere in the best colleges list, atleast not on the US news. Yes, I do know it is the ranked 1 for masters program in the north but what about undergraduate. Does it fail to make it even to the top 100? Why so? Also it is not in the top 50 business schools in US news, even though it is 13th (i think) in business week. Why this dicrepancy?

The rankings are based on classifications set by the Carnegie Foundation that define types of universities. A National University is defined differently than a Master's level university. Nova's ranking among master's universities IS a ranking for its undergraduate programs. I don't know enough about business schools to answer your second question.

It's not #1 for master's "programs." US News divides up colleges into different types, and then ranks them within those types. The "master's" type (of which Villanova is #1 in the North) are universities that offer master's degrees in a fairly wide variety of subjects, but have very few or no doctorate programs. So they are sort of in between "National" universities and liberal arts colleges (the former offering a wide variety of doctorates, and the latter offering very few or no master's degrees). The institutions of the "master's" type would seem to have professors who are not as absorbed in high-level research and graduate-level teaching as their counterparts at "National" universities. As for how Villanova would rank among the National universities for an undergraduate education, I'd guess somewhere near Syracuse University.

What are you basing your guess on? How do you translate a master's ranking into a possible national ranking? Or do you just see them as similar schools?

approximately where would villanova stand in the national universities list.

Please dont tell me i am trying to compare apples and oranges. just give me an estimate or something

Re Villanova and Syracuse, they have similar SAT ranges, acceptance rates, and yields. They both seem to be respectable academically without being ridiculously hard to get into. Fordham, Southern Methodist, and Baylor also seem to share similar stats.

Villanova is very similar to the following schools based on average SAT scores and student to faculty ratio (STFR). The average SAT score at Villanova is 1285 and the STFR is 12 to 1.

(38: US News ranking) University of Wisconsin-Madison (Public) - SAT: 1280/ STFR: 13 to 1

(50) Tulane University (Private) - SAT: 1280/I couldnt find the STFR, but both Tulane and Villanova have about 6,000 undergraduate students.

(52) University of Miami-FL (Private) - SAT: 1275/ STFR: 13 to 1

(54) George Washington University (Private)-SAT: 1290/ STFR: 13 to 1

(57) Boston University (Private)-SAT: 1270/ STFR: 12 to 1

If I had to guess where Villanova would be ranked based on the US News formula I would think it would be somewhere between 50 and 60. Private schools with similar profiles seem to be in that range.
(I obtained the average SAT scores from CollegeBoard.com and the STFRs from Review.com)
