I am a junior and I need help finding schools to tour/ apply to. I’ve toured over 10 schools already and my favorites have been Elon and Wake Forest. I’m looking for a private, medium-sized, preferably liberal arts, school in or very close to a large city on the east coast.
I’m an IB Diploma Candidate with a 4.5 GPA. I am in 6 national honor societies (Thespian, NHS, Chinese, Quill and Scroll, Science, and Rho Kappa), and have/ have had numerous leadership positions throughout high school. I am heavily involved in theatre and lacrosse, and plan to pursue theatre in college. I have done lots of volunteering at nonprofits, church, and through my school, and I have paid job at which I work two to three times a month.
I want to be a pediatrician and I think I want to major in either Psychology (basic, I know), Theatre, Biology, or something of the sort.
HI! Try University of Richmond. The campus is BEAUTIFUL and they have small class sizes, a very strong internship program called the Richmond Guarantee, and the city of Richmond about 20 min away which all of the student on our tour said they loved. Not sure if you consider this “east coast” . Or what about Georgetown? It’s larger than my son’s preferred size, but when we toured it didn’t feel huge (we live right near Ohio State U which really is huge).
Wesleyan U is strong in theater, lacrosse (D3), and East Asian Studies/languages.
U of Rochester is also a great performing arts school with D3 lax - great place to do premed, and a vibrant (albeit cold) city.
Vassar and Bard are smaller LAC’s with serious theater programs and women’s lax teams.
(If you’re potentially recruitable for D1 lacrosse, then that’s a different list, but you don’t sound like you’re aiming for that level?)
I know you said out of state but you certainly have to consider Vanderbilt! It’s amazing! And I will second the U of Richmond suggestion. My D18 will be at Vandy in the fall but honestly URichmond was her first choice, there are many similarities. UR is an amazing all-around school from the business to the science to the emphasis on arts… Richmond as a city is pretty vibrant without some of the craziness you see in other large cities. Also one of her BFFs is going to Hobart-Wm Smith which we haven’t visited personally but seems like an equally amazing school. Not on the coast or in a big city (about halfway between Rochester and Syracuse), but is on a fantastic lake. Our friend has a Creative Writing scholarship and will be on their sailing team; they have fantastic study abroad opportunities. Of the two schools you like, Elon is probably better as far as the Theater department (fun fact Grant Gustin aka The Flash, went to school there!) but my D18 preferred Wake, mainly loved the campus-wide civic focus as well as the campus itself (URichmond is much like Wake in campus esthetics). Good luck with your decision (don’t rule out Vandy!)
What is your definition of “medium sized”? For some, that’s a student body over 2000, for others that’s a student body over 6000.
Are you a boy or a girl? If you’re a girl, are you open to the idea of going to a women’s college? Bryn Mawr has the consortium, so it’s a small school that’s not really small.
