I want to double major in chemical engineering and Spanish

–Home state?
–Financial picture?
–School size/location preferences?
–What schools are on your current list?

@Dunboyne

  • Iowa
  • between $10-15 thousand a year with scholarships
    -so far Iowa state, u of Alabama, Vanderbilt, case western reserve, brown, Miami university, and Marquette university

You can pay $10-15K per year? If you’ve run any Net Price Calculators, how much is your family expected to pay (EFC)?

At Northwestern it is very doable to do a double major between engineering and liberal arts (like Spanish). NU also has a reputable ChemE department. Your ACT score is within the 25-75 percentile for NU as well, and I see no reason why you wouldn’t get serious consideration for acceptance.

NU also gives good FA.

If you like CWRU from what you have learned about it, also consider the University of Rochester. UR has a classically arranged campus on the edge of a medium-sized city and is solid in the academic programs you are interested in.

Difficult to assist further without some clarification: Will your family’s finances qualify you for financial aid, or are you looking for schools where your stats will generate enough merit aid to drive the net cost down to $10-15K?

Big difference.

Did you already apply to Alabama? If not, quickly get your app in…the scholarship deadline is in Dec.

Your net cost would be about 12k.

@ColdinMinny I am lookin for a school that will have enough to merit aid to lower the costs to between $10-15 thousand

@mom2coIIegekids I applied today!

@Dunboyne my family is expected to pay a little under full tuition, at most schools

So your typical EFC is ~$35-40K, but you can only pay $10-15K? If that’s correct, how are you going to pay for the likes of Brown, Vandy, CWRU?

Right. AFAIK Brown has no merit aid.

With your grades and ACT, it is relatively easy to drive the price down to $25 to $30K, but to get down to $10-15K is going to take some work, and will essentially rule out top and mid-tier schools, roughly speaking. Certainly Brown and Vandy are completely out of the picture.
