I'm a junior and I was waiting until I got my December SAT scores to make a post like this. I'm just curious, what schools do you think I have a chance in? I'd really like a smaller school in NY, PA, NJ, MD or New England.

White, Female, Long Island public school
GPA: Not really sure, unweighted average is about 99%
Rank: 2/512
SAT: 1510 (V 800 M 710) I'm going to take the new one also though.
SAT II's (so far): 740 World History
AP's (so far): 5 on World History, and I'm taking US History and Physics B this year

EC's (this is where it gets bad): I'm secretary of my class.
I just started these this year because I was sorta club-phobic in 9th and 10th grade: Mathletes, Big Buddies, School Newspaper. I could possibly become an editor next year.

In the summer before 10th grade I did a summer program (non-credit classes) at Brown.
Last summer I worked at a summer camp.

My grandpa went to Wharton at UPenn.

Do I have a chance at Dartmouth or Brown? What schools would be considered matches for me?

If I were you I would do ED at Dartmouth or Brown if those are the schools you like the most. They both were my favorites also. Figure out which one this summer, they are both awesome schools. Build up some leadership this year, pull of a crazy event, do something!

After those two, I would also look at Duke and Penn as other reaches. As for matches: Middlebury, Vassar, Emory (far), UVA, Northwestern (far I know), Cornell (kind of big but its a match).

How would you describe yourself? Some places to check out:

Amherst
Williams
Middlebury
Dickinson
Colgate
Lafayette
Muhlenberg
Hamilton
Bowdoin
Trinity
Swarthmore
Haverford
Wesleyan
Vassar
Bryn Mawr
Smith
Wellesley
Skidmore
Kenyon

Try to visit at least some of these schools over spring break, along with Brown and/or Dartmouth and you'll soon have a clearer idea of what appeals to you and what doesn't. Some of these schools are "preppy" some more liberal/artsy --- visit a few and see what appeals to you.

Great list, Carolyn, as usual -- Suggest the OP target in on Swarthmore; it sounds like the perfect school for her. Others in that range include Amherst and Wesleyan, but think Swat more to her liking. Mount Holyoke and Smith if she wants all-women could be added to the list.

Collegeparent, Yes, Swat was the first school that popped into my head for her to consider as well. But it's hard to know without "knowing" the original poster and her personality.

Wow, thanks everyone! I'm definitely going to look into Swarthmore. I think I'd lean more toward liberal/artsy than preppy, and probably not all-women. Hopefully I can visit some schools over February break. I forgot to add that I take dance, although that's not too important, and I'm hoping to start a Quiz Bowl team at my school.
