I am a grade 12 Indian CBSE student. NEW SAT score 1280, Toefl 98, 9th and 10th marks: 9.6 cgpa (92 %), 11th marks 75 %, decent Ec’s (about 10-15 things). MAJOR: BUSINESS. What type of universities should I look at in the US? Where do I have a good chance? Which top colleges I can try for?
What can you afford? Schools that provide good financial aid to internationals are out of reach for you. If by top colleges you mean top 30 schools your chances are pretty slim.
I won’t require financial aid. By top colleges I mean Babson, Nyu, USc, Irvine etc. I am definitely not thinking about ivy’s and all. I am sure of applying to 8 universities including Penn state, Purdue, Ohio state, Arizona etc. Where else do you think I can apply? What is the best I can get?
You keep asking the same question in thread after thread.
To answer, AGAIN – no one can tell you “what is the best you can get.” Since you don’t need financial aid, you can apply to lots of schools and see where you get in. Search ‘best business programs US’ and start reading. Apply to a variety of schools – from reaches (Ivies, etc.,) to safeties (schools where your stats put you in the upper percentiles of incoming freshmen.) Do your homework and your research. We shouldn’t have to do it for you.
That was rude. I have just asked such a question once before, which was a little different. In that question I asked about my chances at particular universities and in this question I am asking to what kind of universities I should apply to. I don’t want to waste money by applying everywhere, so I want to create a list of 8-10 universities, which is not easy for a beginner in the field like me. Hence I want to be extra sure of what I’m doing.
There are links on the left for college search and selection.
You should use the links. Only you know where you would fit.
The universities are vastly different in “personality” and fit. Your stats are not exceptional so, as an international, your chances are not great. No one can answer where you would fit.
For instance, UC Irvine is a large commuter campus in a “suburb”. On the weekends, it’s pretty empty. It is a public university, so the system of getting classes is very different and can be tough. (You will pay $55k per year)
OTOH: Up the road, USC is a private school with a very large sports and alumni network. It is in a very populated area of Los Angeles and is not in a good neighborhood. Lots of the housing is in apartments in the neighborhood. (You will pay $70k per year).
Both schools are in Southern California, and are not that far apart, but they are vastly different in style. They are also in a part of California, where the car is king. There is some public transportation, but it’s not great for either.
You need to investigate each college web site and web cam. You can’t expect for people here to tell you where you will fit. They can give you suggestions here, but you can’t expect them to generate your list and find your fit.
You should apply to Penn State DUS to be sure to get in. Penn State doesn’t have pre admits - you’d still take the Business freshman seminar , all the pre-reqs, have the same grade requirements.
(you could of course say you want to apply to smeal on our psu app but you’d still have to do the same thing as dus students, and it’s harder to get in as smeal than as dus. Many students simply don’t know the trick.)
Other possibilities for you include University of Oregon or Western Washington U, College of Charleston, cal poly slo business, sdsu, UAlabama, FIU, Fsu.
What is DUS?
It’s a category in Penn State applications where you don’t indicate a major. You choose dus instead. Easy trick right?
Guys which one is the best for a business major- CSU LB, SJSU, Tampa and SDSU? I intend to apply to one or two of them as my safety net.
Myos1634, I have heard that applying with an undeclared major makes it difficult for one to get into business. That is the sole reason I am not applying to Irvine, what is the point in going for a good college if I eventually don’t get my intended major. Similar is with Indiana. In other colleges (like Penn state, Florida) Is it easy to get my major if I apply as undeclared?
Not Indiana - Indiana has pre admits (students admitted directly to the major have priority, and those not pre admitted have higher requirements to get the major.) At Indiana, you need to apply to Kelley as a freshman if you want the business school. (I would also strongly advise you take the AP calculus AB class/test because otherwise you’ll be stuck in a lethal class called Finite, which is a weeder class.)
Penn State is different - there are no advantages to asking admission to Smeal. All students take the same classes and must fulfill the same requirements ; there is no priority given to students who applied to Smeal vs. Students who applied dus - except dus is easier.
