Where to attend--Maryland state schools

Hello everyone, I just got done getting acceptance and rejection letters and suchs and have narrowed my college choices down to two Maryland state schools: University of Maryland at College Park and Saint Mary’s College of Maryland. Naturally, Im trying to figure out which one would suit me better. I am planning to major in Political Science and probably a language. Also, I was accepted into the honors program at UMCP. If anyone knows anything about either of these schools, or has an opinion on which I should attend, I would really appreciate hearing it. Thanks!

i dont know much about st.mary's but umd-cp is a very fun college. i know lots of people that go there and have loved it. the school is very spirited and fun. while they have had recent issues with robberies and the areas outside of campus arent that exciting, it is still a fun school and dc is real close too! good luck!

UMD SUCKS! It is the worst college I have ever visited. Don't go there.

Im in the same posistion as sampsonite there. I've visted both colleges and I think I will visit College park again soon. College park is a very good public school that has more to offer in some areas that St. Mary's lacks, such as course variety, the ability to meet a very diverse group of people, and most of all going to a large university will tend to make one work harder I believe. Going to the small school has advantages as well such as the class size is much smaller than a big unversity and 1:1 with your teachers is very common place. I think that how much money a school will give you is important as well, the less debt you have the better. So in the end I think it comes down to a few main things, who has the better academics, which school will bring out the best in you, which school makes you feel more comfortable, and after four years which school will be more likely to get you a job or into a good graduate school.

If you can stand the isolation and the smaller student body, St. Mary's hands-down unless you are going into business or theater arts.

Montgomery College - Rockville is pretty nice..
so is UMD-College Park

many of my friends go there

If you are interested in Political Science then UMCP is the place to be since you'll have easy access to both internships in D.C. and Annapolis. You'll get lots of "information" in class, but the internships are where you will really "learn".
Good luck.

Having lived next door to UMCP for half my life, I would say that UMCP is a very beautiful campus. The greenery is excellent and the winters (Snow! Yay!) are fun too. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT IF YOU HAVE ANY KIND OF ALLERGIES TOWARD POLLEN! DURING THE SPRING, YOU WILL LITERALLY FEEL LIKE YOU'RE DEAD! But because I did not have any such allergies, I loved my time there. There are plenty of things to do and the campus is just beautiful. It may be a public school, but it does not feel at all crowded. It is bordered by State Highway 193, route 1, (which goes from Florida to Maine), and Adelphi Rd. It is not a boring place! DC is about 7 miles south and Baltimore is about 40 miles north. NY is 6 hours away and Ocean City is about 2 or 3. And you ever get really bored, you can go fishing or crab catching at the inlet (not near Baltimore!) of Chesapeak Bay by going down Route 4. Firework shows every 4th of July! New Paramount's park (or was it Six Flags?) in Prince George's county close to the school. Overall, I had a great time living near there. Although I was not a student, I know that UMCP is NOT a boring place. Too bad I live in CA now and I would have to pay out of state if I went there...

Depends on the major u want to get:

-Computer Science = Montgomery College - Rocville
-English = UMD-CP
-History = St. Marys...
-Pre-med = Johns Hopkins

UMBC is also excellent in technology and computer science...
