Where To Begin Looking?

Hi, I am a junior in high school and am starting to look at different colleges. It has been an extremely difficult decision for me and I hardly know where to begin. I am a New York State Resident and would like to stay somewhere in the Northeast of go out West. I would prefer a rather large University but that is not set in stone.

I am ranked 16/223 in my class.
I got an overall 2060 SAT: 740 Math/660 CR/660 Writing
I have taken the hardest possible course load and plan to graduate with 6+ APs
I have gotten over a 90% on every NYS Regent's Exam
Two Years National Honors Society
Employed for one year
Competitively Sailing for 2 years

What level of schools should I start to look at? I visited Pittsburgh and I really liked it but there are so many options and I am just looking for a place to start. Thanks to anybody who can offer me help.

Cornell would be a good option if you’re interested in one of the contract colleges. Do you have any idea of what you would like to major in? Could you sail on a varsity team?

Overall your stats are very strong (good class rank, decent SAT’s, Good EC’s), so I think you have a shot at a lot of places, but I think we may need more information to help match you with a school.

1) What is your likely major and career?

2) What all do you want in a school? Big? Small? Quiet? Rah rah, with big sports? Rural? City?

3) What is your budget? how much will your parents pay? That will largely determine where you should apply.

I am most likely going to study history and either teach it at the collegiate level or work for a museum or university. Cost is not the underlying factor for me but I don’t have an infinite budget either. It would be nice to go somewhere cheap but that could be figured out. Also, I would like to go to a pretty exciting school with an entertaining sports atmosphere.

What do you mean by “somewhere cheap”? That can mean quite a range. :)

That said, with your SAT, you could get a great merit scholarship. Is that from one sitting?

With your stats, you could apply to a variety of schools, but some are going to cost $55k+ per year…so obviously not “cheap.” LOL

OP, odds are good that you will need to go to graduate school (and pay for it) with your career goals. So you should consider that when looking at the cost of schools.

My advice in addition to asking out here on CC is to take the Fiske Guide to Colleges and look through for colleges that are in the location and size range you are interested in, and also strong in History. If cost is important, try to find a few where your statistics are above their 50% SAT range and that also give merit aid.

If you have only taken the SAT once, you might take it once more in the fall. Although you probably should plan your visits and applications based on your current scores, and it is a bonus (especially for merit money) if you can boost your scores.

Yes that is one sitting I have only taken the SAT once. I will look into the guide thanks for everyone’s suggestions.

Any other ideas?
