Where to buy books?

I might order books once the school year starts...

Why wait and risk not having them for the beginning of classes?

Because you usually don't need them for the start of classes, and I'd like to wait and see how much the class really requires the book.

My physics class has no teacher listed, no classroom listed, and a one sentence course description. One math class hasn't listed a course text yet, and it's not obvious which one the teacher will choose. I have an old version of the book for another math class. I'll get the books for the third math class whenever I feel like it/make sure I'm sticking out the course, maybe see if my friend can get me cheaper international versions. And my American Culture class has no textbook.

Be careful about buying the International edition of a book unless you plan to keep it after taking the course. It may have significantly lower resale value if the ISBN is different from the U.S. edition.

Go to Taiwan...lol

I took diff. eq. at a local college this past year and the prof. was from Taiwan. She told us to try to make contacts with someone in Taiwan since many college books are available there for insanely low prices.

My girlfriend's roommate's boyfriend's parents do business in Taiwan and China so I might try to convince him to pick some up for me...I doubt it will happen though. Took a look at his DVD collection and was like "why do you have season 2 of the OC in Chinese/English?" Reason=$2 for the entire set. :)

I just got my orgo book new from amazon for 9.81! The other books I need, however, are not as cheap...

Most of my classes don't have professors listed. Should I email each department to ask? Will they get really annoyed by all these emails? In math, engineering, chem, or physics classes, they usually ask you to buy 1 or 2 books, right?

Speaking of international version, isn't that illegal? It's sad that Chinese people have no respect for copyright.

I went to Taiwan about a month or so ago. It's really hard to find any videos, books, etc. that's pirated or cheap anymore.

However, my friend went to China and bought a bunch of $2 movies off the street, so maybe try there?

<sarcasm>dude, i know what you mean...it's like chinese people are responsible for all the wars in the world!!!</sarcasm>

seriously, what an ignorant statement

"Speaking of international version, isn't that illegal?"

International editions are usually legit and printed by the publisher, who realize people in third world countries don't have $150 to pay for a textbook. As far as buying them in the US, let's just say with the way publishers rip off students I don't feel too bad (think new edition every year with problem renumbering).

My friend who is in three of my classes (complex analysis, general and differential geometry, and quantum mechanics) is a Korean citizen, so he has no problem getting international versions of things.

"<sarcasm>dude, i know what you mean...it's like chinese people are responsible for all the wars in the world!!!</sarcasm>

seriously, what an ignorant statement"

Untrue. I said nothing about wars. Go to your FOB Chinese friend's house and check out his/er video/music collection and you'll know what I mean. Also visit China, it's easier to find pirated movies/music than to find authentic ones. It's a fact, just admit it.

Whoa, sorry if I offended anyone by mentioning the China/Taiwan thing. I didn't mean like the stuff was pirated. I just meant that not eveyone in that country has the disposable income that we have in America so their prices will be less.

Yeah, like we don't pirate in America. Its sad that Americans have no respect for copyright. There's even a whole thread on this forum about how not to get caught using bittorrent and limewire.

And it's not nice grouping everyone into one group.

O yeah, Christine, tell the French government that. I was watching a TV program on Phoenix TV online (yes, I'm more Chinese than anyone on here), they were talking about how the French customs agents were targeting people with Chinese passports for fake brand named duffel bags. Tell me that's not sad. Why would I offend my ethnicity. I was simply pointing out a fact. Yea, Americans might use illegal P2P programs but at least you don't see fake goods in the mall...yet.

Alright, if what I said offended all you Chinese people on here, I apologize. Back to the topic, I found UM bookstore site (<a href="http://umichigan.bkstore.com/bkstore/TextbookSelection.do?st=743)%5B/url%5D">http://umichigan.bkstore.com/bkstore/TextbookSelection.do?st=743)</a>, it allows you to find what books you need for each class but it doesn't tell you the ISBN's (I wonder why). Anyone have a solution to this? Anyone ordered books yet? If so, how?

Email your professors

<a href="http://umichigan.bkstore.com/bkstore/content%5B/url%5D">http://umichigan.bkstore.com/bkstore/content</a></p>

This one tells you the ISBNs.

The bookstores will also tell you if you call. Don't make professors suffer because the bookstores are greedy. They hate them as much as we do :)

This one didn't tell me my ISBNs....

Samwise, thanks for pointing that out. That's the one I used and it doesn't show ISBN's for my books. Should I email the departments since I don't know my professors?

Sorry you're right, it only gives you the title and author. A quick search on Amazon will get you the ISBN if you need that though. The other two bookstore sites don't give you any info at all. If the books aren't listed then they haven't been reported by the prof yet. So you could either wait or email the prof to find out. Which class do you not know your professors for?
