ordering my books for classes, when do i do it?

when/where can i order my books for classes?
how do i know which books to buy? i kind of wanted to get them ahead of time and look them over before i leave.

with Ulrich's, you can reserve em ahead of time over the internet. You just type in your courses that you're taking and they reserve the book for you.

You would probably be much better off (financially) ordering them from another place. There are a lot of sites that check all bookstores to find the cheapest price, just do a search on google. Amazon is usually pretty cheap. If you wait a couple of weeks they'll probably have some discounts for textbooks (they did last year).

how do i know which textbooks to buy?

You can ask Ulrich's what the required books are for you course numbers, but the list isn't completed yet.

I found out what books were required for Chem and Math by using the online course guide. :)

oh..my..god...I looked online and its like $120-$150 bucks original price. That's Frickin ridiculous. Thankfully, if you type the names of these books in google, you can come up with some sites that sell it to you as low as $30-$60 dollars. I mean...let's say 1 book is $130, x by 3 classes = $390 + $80 Chem Lab = $470!!!! That's $940/yr...that's ridiculous. Go on the internet...find it for like $70 bucks...that would be like $290...save upto $180/term...$360 a yr...wow

i just ordered mine from the Union Bookstore, and while it is probably not the best price in the world, they are garunteed to be available and all you have to do is present your ever popular M-card to get them. Another plus is the lack of line standing.

If you want used books I recommend bookosoncampus.com The way it works is that you get your books cheaper and the seller gets his books at a higher price because there is no middle man to pay. Its like ebay for books. Also, however, the seller is a student at the school you look at. You just meet them on campus somewhere to exchange books and funds. It is that easy.

how do u know which books to buy by using the online course catalog?

for example, i want to know what book to use for math115 caculus I more than anything else...

UH, go to the course guide, search for your class...it should list all the classes click on your section and for the math this is what you would get: http://www.lsa.umich.edu/lsa/cg_detail/0,,8,00.html?termArray=f_05_1560&term=Fall%202005&content=1560MATH115001
go to the website on it (Course Homepage) and the book to get is on that page. [Text: Deborah Hughes-Hallett, Andrew Gleason, et al.:
Calculus: Single Variable, Fourth Edition, Wiley, 2005] My chem class had the book listed on the class listing.

are you sure it's 2005? i'm seeing it as 2004...

Also, to be sure that a certain professor isn't going to use another book or not use a certain book on the expected list of books that will be used in a certain class, it may be a good idea to e-mail your professors and ask them personally what books will be needed (if you know who you'll have already). I e-mailed two of my professors so far and heard back from both of them. They were both eager to help me. Give the professors a few days to respond, but don't be surprised if they don't reply. When I wrote to mine, I always had that possibility on the back of my mind, but luckily, both professors wrote back to me.

yea my Chem teacher never responded (a-hole, lol)

Umar,

Give him/her a few more days. My English professor just got back with me Friday morning, and I sent out the e-mail on Tuesday. However, my history professor got back with me on Wednesday so it kind of varies on how quickly they will respond.

Plus, your chem. professor may just be out of town right now or has not edited the syllabus as of yet. You nenver know. (LOL. Don't you think it's a little early for you to already be calling your professors profane names behind their backs? Jeez. At least wait until the first week is over with to begin doing that! ;))

lol okay okay...I'll wait till the 2nd day of classes, haha
