I am planning on visiting this weekend (sleep over weekend) but not spending the night in the dorms. Where are some good places to eat near CMU that are unique to the area?

I am a current first year student here at cmu. I would say if you're looking to eat off campus, Primanti brothers down by Pitt off of Forbes avenue is definitely a unique pittsburgh-style sandwich place. There are plenty of other options in that area as well as in Squirrel Hill which is a quick bus ride away. Hope that helps a little!

Another good bet for anyone else heading to the area is The O on Forbes down in Oakland (ask anyone at CMU where it is, they'll know), as well as the Union Grill on Craig St.

There's also some nice places to eat in Shadyside, which you can find on a map by looking for Walnut Ave. They tend to be a bit more trendy, and maybe a little more expensive than what you'll find in Squirrel Hill, but there's some tasty places to eat.

If you're looking for some fantastic (and inexpensive) ice cream, find Dave & Andy's. It's off of Forbes in Oakland on the corner with the Walgreens/Rite Aid/whatever.

We always eat at the indian restaurant Tamarind at 257 North Craig St. (between Bayard St and Center Ave).

lulu"s and get the bubble tea!!!

DS was a regular at the Tam. He always ate real late and the Tam. was open later in the night. The owners were pleased that a non Indian ate their food so heartily and eventually made fresh nan just for him. DS wondered why the nan was so much better than his mother's, real butter makes the difference.

mathmom, is that the Indian place that's inside of a normal house? I remember eating at one on Craig once for lunch. It was a buffet style and there were only about 5-6 tables in the room. Definitely still the best Indian food I've had.

Also, anyone that's visiting CMU and is a night-owl. A lot of restaurants in Oakland do half priced appetizers or certain entrees after 11 PM. Heh, I remember one time going to Mad Mex where they had half priced margaritas (and they make them strong) followed by half priced hot wings. Kinda wish it was the other way around, but still a great time with a bunch of friends.

Yes, it's in an old victorian house. They serve some things there I haven't seen anywhere else. Their nan is good. I can't remember if they make vindaloo hot enough for our son. He's another non-Indian who loves Indian food.

I agree with collegebound_91. You simply MUST go to Lulu's! It's a staple for CMU students. Don't forget the tapioca with your bubble tea!
