I want to get more community work under my belt, as I know it will help me with opening more opportunities for grad school down the road. However, though I see tons of information online about what types of community work you can do, I haven't found much of anything about how to find community work in my area, as well as what are some of the better types of work to do that look better for colleges?

My major is in physics, but I don't know if I'd be able to find anything involved in that in regards to community service. I'm really just looking for where I can find jobs and what ones do colleges prefer to see?

Since I am an adult and have to work for a living, my involvement in community work will be very limited, maybe a day or two a week for a few hours at best. I was also wondering, do schools like to contact a reference that oversaw your community work, or is it just really about making sure you actually did it? I'm just wondering if it would be a good idea to get in good with someone at the community work for a reference letter from them down the road, or if that's not something colleges typically look for. I'm new to all this, so looking for all the help I can get here, lol.

Also, I do work for a non-profit organization, the YMCA. Would that count towards community work, since I am directly involved in and financially contribute towards our annual support campaign?
