Hello,
I was hoping to find some schools that offer academic full ride scholarships (or something close to it). Basically, in-state (AK) most of the costs would be covered because of scholarships here that I will automatically get, however I REALLY don't want to stay here at all. So, I was hoping to find some schools out of state where I may be able to get a full ride scholarship or something close to it because otherwise my parents expect me to stay here. Any help or schools you could recommend would be greatly appreciated!!!

SAT: 2010 (1390 CR+M)
GPA: 3.97 uw
In the top 5% of class
Various extra curriculars and volunteer hours.
Interested in nursing.

Try retaking the SAT for a 1400 CR+M and take the ACT for a 32 to open up more potential full ride scholarship possibilities, as listed in the page linked from reply #1.

You need to retest to get your single-sitting M+CR to be a 1400+ That will open up more possibilities.

What is your major?

I doubt you are going to get a full-ride at a school that isn’t a commuter school or a school that interests you, so we need to know how much your family will pay each year. If the answer is zero, that may be an issue.

You will find more schools that will give you full tuition or a bit more, but full rides are harder to come by…especially at schools that aren’t commuter/suitcase schools.

Your AK residency will provide some interest at some schools, but it’s probably not going to be enough to get you past the <1400 problem. Are you native American or Eskimo?

as mom2 pointed out, a 1400 will trigger certain merit awards. yeah, a pain, but they gotta draw the line somewhere. think of it as a chance to get a 1500–that would REALLY help with merit.

UPitt has a very good nursing program that is tough to get into, but Pitt loves rank and you have it, and they love GPA and you have it, and they love geographical diversity and you have it. if you had a 1500, you could be looking at full tuition. Pitt gives excellent merit aid.

A couple years ago, Pitt invited 68 students to campus tours and interviews. They gave 8-12 full rides, and almost all the rest got full tuition was my understanding. In addition, they gave out full tuition to students whom they didn’t invite. This info came from CC posts and Pitt websites, so pass the salt, please.

If you are female, I believe Agnes Scott in Georgia offers some competitive full ride merit awards. Alabama offers some few full rides for exceptionally high-scoring students; I don’t know how many. They also offer automatic full tuition for 1400 SAT (see trigger above); the residual would be about 11K.

@jkeil911 wow thank you for all the information!! Pitt sounds like a great school with an amazing nursing program, however, I don’t know if a 1500 would be possible. I raised from 1220 first try (absolutely no studying/preparing) to 1390, so 10+ points could be doable but 100+ might be a reach. Do you think a 1400 would make me eligible for full tuition or full ride there? (Since I have everything else). Or would they not even consider me without that 1500?

I’ll have to look into those other ones too! Thanks.

anything could happen, of course, but I’m not suggesting you need a 1500 to enter the nursing program. I’m suggesting that taking the exam again would give you a chance to cement good merit at Pitt. I’m very positive about increasing SAT scores; I think it can be done, but once you get to 1400 CR + M your chances of improving by 100 points decreases a lot. A 1500 means you made very few mistakes. There are people on CC who are not as optimistic in thinking scores can be dramatically changed. It does indeed depend on the student, the method, the day of the exam, etc.

@jkeil911 well I’m debating now if I should take the SAT again next month. I just finished a practice test, however, and scored 1320 CR+M, mostly because of a couple stupid mistakes in the math section. I think I was pretty lucky to have even gotten 1390, so I don’t even know if I can do that again, let alone over 1400, but it may be worth another try.

Looking at Pitt’s website, it says minimum 1450 for academic scholarships, so even if I got into the nursing program, I don’t know if I’d be able to afford it without a merit scholarship, which it seems like I won’t be eligible for.

Do you got to Pitt by chance? Or just know a lot about it?

tell me, OP, that you have a better offer. getting a 1450 is all about reducing stupid mistakes. drill, drill, drill. This seems to be a weekend of negativity. So many students insisting on what they cannot do even though they have needs that can’t be met any other way. nobody’s going to wave a magic wand and make it easy for you, OP. You’ll either suck it up and make it happen or you won’t be able to go to college where you want to or at a price your family can afford. To quote tough Chicago cop Sean Connery to squeaky clean G-Man Kevin Costner in The Untouchables: “what are you willing to do?”

I’m not sure what your reasons are for thinking that you cannot improve your SAT score, OP, but you won’t score 1450 until you get over the “I can’t do it.”

You might want to try a practice ACT – some students do better on the ACT than the SAT. If your practice ACT score is 32 or higher, you may want to sign up for that test for real.

@ucbalumnus I’ve done two ACT practice tests and scored 29 and 30, so I’m thinking my SAT score will probably be easier to raise.

@jkeil911 well I’m sure I can reduce the stupid mistakes in the math section since I scored 750 on the last actual SAT I took, and can probably do that again, but CR is more difficult for me and I have yet to find a way to really increase that. Thanks anyway for the help though! Pitt is definitely a consideration for me now.
