Not sure how much time you have but as you make your way N from Logan the towns of Salem and Newburyport are fun stops, as is Portsmouth, NH (the Wentworth in neighboring New Castle is a nice stay).
@momoffour the Colony in Kennebunkport is an old-school hoot. It’s similar in spirit to the Wentworth except with having had zillion$ put into updating it (e.g. it has wifi but no AC in the rooms). It’s also dog friendly which is awesome.
Just booked Boothbay Harbor, ME for 3 nights, Ogunquit, ME for 2 nights, and will likely book Hanover, NH/Woodstock, VT area for the last 2 nights and some colorful autumn foliage. Very different than Idaho/Montana, but will still be nice. I’ve been to these areas before, but my wife has not.
Good for you for getting your booking done. I’m looking at Boothbay Harbor now. Looked at Fisher’s Whatf but it’s a ground room with the docks right there. Maybe noisy? Suggestions?
Hope you get to go. As a far more mature high school friend than I once told me, “He who dies with the most toys, doesn’t win. See the world!” That really stuck with me.
Bar Harbor is very booked, but I did find a non-view room at the West Street Hotel. One reviewer said the terrible B word (bedbugs) so a little worried but it was mentioned above in a favorable way so fingers crossed.
Then we are going to drive to the end of 95 just to say we have driven the entire length. Retired life.
Thanks for the help. Next up will probably be Kearney, NE and sandhill cranes up to Mt Rushmore next spring.
I have stayed at the west street hotel probably 8 times (including right when they had just opened). It has always been clean. Their maintenance was quick (we had a sticky bathroom door once and they came immediately to fix it.) Since you won’t have a view, you can spend all the time you want on the rooftop by the pool, which has a great view of the harbor. I also really enjoy the food in their restaurant - Paddy’s - an Irish pub with music most nights. Have a great trip!
I would recommend the Quechee Inn, right outside of Woodstock. My daughter’s wedding was there and I stayed in the room that was the original kitchen, all cooking done in the fireplace. My room was the one that Julia Child stayed in when she was there. Just don’t ask me how bad my impersonation of her was after several cocktails!
We had our rehearsal dinner at the Quechee Inn in 1982. We just came back from 5 days in that area. We stayed at the Woodstock Inn (where we had our wedding reception). I highly recommend either place.
Our Maine trip was fun. I especially like Bar Harbor and the West Street hotel was wonderful (thanks for the suggestion). Parking was a problem in Acadia but we managed to find a spot and hike the Jordan Pond Trail. It was cloudy so no view from the mountain top. Qgonquit’s Marginal Way walk was nice and we saw several whales on the tour out of Boothbay. Portland was the town we ended up not doing much. Waited an hour to eat at Duck Fat. I’m not a foodie and didn’t see why people rave about fries with gravy but the milkshake was good. A highlight for me was seeing Katahdin Mountain because I fantasize about hiking the AT. Now I will follow the Badlands thread because we want to see the sandhill cranes in NE and check off Mt Rushmore.
So glad you liked the West Street Hotel. We were there in late August and found a spot at Jordan’s Pond for the first time ever - just lucked out with somebody puling out (we have been to Acadia probably 8 times and never been able to find one before.) We really enjoyed the view and the popovers there.
We were at Acadia around the same time and can’t wait to return. If you’re a pizza lover, I highly recommend Hearth & Harbor in Southwest Harbor – delicious wood-fired pies, friendly atmosphere, and the best seafood chowder I’ve had. Definitely worth the wait and the detour! https://www.hearthandharbor.net/
Jordan Pond has multiple parking areas. There is parking out in front of the restaurant (Jordan Pond House), parking along the road to the boat launch (face-in parking) and a pretty large lot just beyond the entrance to the boat launch road off the Loop Road. The loop trail is our go-to hike; we’ve visited almost every year since the mid-1980’s.
I can attest to the exact same thing the day we were there - all those lots full and cars circling! And also true the days we were there every past year when we didn’t get lucky enough to get a spot.
The first day we went there, there were spots but it was raining! The rainy day we were able to get a time to drive up the mountain. The next sunny day didn’t have any timed entry slots available
