Hi - My d and I are coming down from Boston in Aug for an admissions visit and I’m looking for a B&B type place out of the city - city prices are definitely more than we want to pay. Thanks.

I am from Boston as well and will be a first year. We stayed at the Radnor Hotel. If you're interested, BMC has this B and B on campus (proceeds def go to the school/scholarship funds, I believe). It may be somewhat expensive but it is beautiful and right on campus!

Great idea - thanks! We were able to find rooms there. Really looking forward to the visit. My d has two very different friends going next year and is very interested in BM

My pleasure!

We stayed in the Marriott Courtyard on Lancaster. It wasn't really cheap, but it had a nice buffet breakfast included with the room booked through Expedia. Also, we were coming from CA and had never been to the East Coast so wanted something familiar the first stay. Even so, we chose to use the same hotel again for drop off this August since it was so convenient to the school and comfy. I saw the BB arrangements right at BMC and thought that looked like a great, less expensive option.

I'm so glad that you're staying in Wyndham. Stayed in room 5, a year or so back, and just loved being there again. The family-style breakfast attracts so many interesting people (and is included in the cost) -- and best, you truly get a taste of the campus by staying there. Talk to the students who work at Wyndham -- collect as many opinions as you can -- and make your own.
Also, try a ginger ale with cranberry juice -- and have a meal in one of the dorms....

I have a D who attends BMC and my first choice for a place to stay is the small hotel on campus--Wyndham. For convenience, it can't be beat. We've stayed at The Radnor Hotel and The Wayne Hotel, which are both close to campus. The Wayne is old and funky and my favorite of the two. Another one that always seems to have good weekend rates is the Marriott in West Conshohocken. My husband is a hotel snob and the weekend that he made reservations, we stayed at the Four Seasons in Philadelphia. It was lovely, but pricey. IIRC the BMC website has a list of hotels and phone numbers.

We just got back and loved the Wyndham - and we were in room number 5 :). Staying on campus gave my d and nice feel for the area as well. BMC has jumped to one of the top 2 on her list.

Bryn Mawr was a last minute add-on to my West Coast Ds list. It was added because she liked their pamphlets and investigated it more. Sometimes that mail deluge actually works. We didn't think much about it and had not heard about it other than a vague sense of the name. She was admitted with a realistic FA package. She did not see it until after she was admitted. We almost did not go because she was also admitted to other terrific schools, but they sent a plane ticket, so why not? It was the last college she saw just two weeks before decisions had to be made. She had tentatively decided on another college. When we went to pick her up from visit days, the first thing she said was, "SWEATSHIRT!!!!!!" BMC seems a perfect fit for her. DH and I were very impressed with it. She says she is not just going to college, she is having an adventure going across the country. That is true. I feel good about it because I feel like it is a very high quality school, too.

One of my roommates is from CA too, and I'm absurdly jealous. My only unfulfilled college wish is that I'd be able to go far far away. The 'adventure' feeling. But nooooo, BMC had to be an hour and a half away from home. GAH.

Haha. I totally understand that Brillar. I told myself at the begining that I was going to go far far away and attend a big school in a big city! Now, I'm going to attend one of the smallest colleges- women's no less- 1 1/2 hours from home. Givin, it is close to Philly but I was most definitely planning to go west coast or abroad. Although looking at it now, it doesn't really make a difference. My parents aren't going to bug me and it just makes coming back for holidays easier!

It is true about the getting back easily to visit for the holidays if you are close. But, when we visited we were pleasantly surprised how very, very easy it is to travel across the country now. It is less than 6 hours on the plane and BMC location near a major airport made it much easier then we thought. It takes longer to drive to visit our oldest daughter in the bay area of CA (we are in SoCal) then it does to fly across the country to BMC! That was the clincher in deciding that BMC really was accessible, even if plane fare has gotten bad. BM included travel expenses in the FA package, so that negated that concern. Add to that the fact that they will store her things over the summer and they allow us to mail her stuff and there is no problem with the distance.

I just hope someone invites her to Thanksgiving dinner at their home. With only a four day break then at the height of travel season, it isn't realistic for her to come home for it. I hope she isn't eating take out on Thanksgiving in her dorm room....sigh.

I wouldn't worry about that. BMC girls are a friendly bunch and many students go off with their friends for thanksgiving. If I didn't love my mom's cooking so much, I would be hoping that my roomie will invite me since she lives in NYC and who doesn't love a free place to stay in NYC?! Chances are your D will make friends quickly and if she doesn't have somewhere, she can stay with me :D.

As far as FA is concerned, it's a total toss up for the most part. I've heard pretty much everything in FA stories. I agree that it shouldn't be a concern as far as making the decision to apply. A lot is random in the process- for instance I got $5,000 more a year in merit than one of my friends from a particular school yet didn't get in to another school that she got into. Applications are a crapshoot. Yeah, you can predict it a bit, but you never know what's going to happen. Hell, my friend applied to Harvard as a joke, and she got in while many students spend their hs careers planning for applications and end up falling short. Apply out of love for a school not b/c it's where your friends are applying or b/c of it's ratings or b/c of a perception of whether or not you'll get in.

Haha, I've already thought about inviting my CA roommate over for Thanksgiving. If we get along (and I'm hoping we will), I'll invite any of my roommates that aren't going home. I'm sure that fun stuff will be going on at BMC, but home-cooked food wins out. :D

Hmmm, I live about 6 1/2 to 7 hours away from Bryn Mawr, kind of an awkward distance. It doesn't seem to merit flying, but driving for a whole day north isn't exactly the best, either. I've been wondering if students take the train at all, like up to Boston or something? Or do they just carpool, generally?

I'll be taking Amtrak, flying when I get a good fare and taking the Bolt Bus (check it out!).
