DS is an avid hockey player, but not built for D1 hockey (is skilled and fast, but not bulky enough to withstand D1-level hits). He expects to play intramural and “beer league” at Yale, and will try out for club hockey.

This morning, as we were discussing how smelly his gear was (the stink is something non-hockey parents can’t comprehend), we wondered if there was a way to store his equipment at Yale when he isn’t using it. Even though he uses fans to blow on the gear after use and washes what is washable, it wouldn’t be appropriate or fair to store it in his dorm suite. He thinks that once on a team (i.e., in the winter), it might be stored at the rink, but he is not sure, and it still raises the question of what to do with it before trying out for teams.

My apologies for asking such a limited-audience question, but does anyone know?

Do you think I’d get a response in a different sub-forum? It probably wouldn’t be a Yale-specific reply, but it would be better than the sound of crickets ;))

Maybe the Yale Parents Thread. People get notifications for that one. You cannot follow a forum any more, so not many will see this. I just saw it because I check the Yale forum once in a while. I would suggest lots of Febreeze. :)

Thanks @musicmerit, that’s a good idea.

We are WAY past what Febreeze can do. Over the years, we acclimated to it, but I don’t think his roommates’ anticipation of attending Yale included DS’s hockey bag.

I’d recommend your son contact the Yale hockey coach (keith.allain@yale.edu) and ask him. Though he might have little or no involvement with the club team, he’ll probably know if there are storage facilities for club members; if not he could direct your son to someone who knows.

@sherpa , thanks, that’s a good idea, I’ll tell him

last year I kept my smelly FOOT hiking boots in the emergency exit staircase next to my suite. (it was erroneously left unlocked all year) that’s not very helpful though because there’s no way to know whether that’ll be an option for you. but just something to keep in mind

Thanks litotes, but I don’t know if that’s an option. Possibly could keep the bag there, but if you keep the wet equipment in the bag, you’ve given up on trying to control the smell and bacterial growth. A pair of hiking boots in a stairwell is one thing, but full hockey gear spread out on a stairwell would be a safety hazard. I’m getting the sense from DS that his making the club team is the best option for storage; it’s actually part of the club team’s recruiting pitch that they’ll provide a locker :-)

The club team has a big closet at the ice rink where they keep all their bags! If he doesn’t end up playing club, he won’t really need all that equipment. Skates, stick, helmet and maybe gloves are all that is needed for intramural hockey. Also, if he has played hockey for several years I’m sure he will make the club team. They are a great team but I don’t think they cut excessively.

@sunmoonstarsrain , thanks for the information. He’s been going to the gym a lot this summer and playing men’s league, so he just might wind up playing club. It remains to be seen how he holds up to a hard hit. He’s fast, got pretty good hands, and hockey sense – but he could use an extra 20-30 pounds.
