Need some info on what happens at the end of the freshman year. Where are the students supposed to store their stuff for the summer? Is there any room at the sophomore housing for their stuff? At the freshman housing? Do they have to rent storage locker?

The reason we are wondering is that if a parent needs to go and help DS with this stuff, then we will need to purchase a plane ticket. Are most kids able to take care of it themselves?

There is an organization known as Hopkins Student Storage. Their Web site used to be: http://ww2.jhu.edu/~hse/hss/ – but the site does not seem to be working right now. I’d suggest calling the Housing Office - 410-516-8282 - for details.

I used Hopkins Student Storage for 2 of my three summers (and I stayed on campus the third summer). Basically, they come and pick up everything from your dorm room at a specified date/time, which I believe in the last week of finals, though I do remember there being some flexibility. They store all your stuff over the summer and then return it all to your new dorm on a specific day before the new school year. If you choose to move off campus your junior year, I don’t believe they deliver off campus (or at least they didn’t used to), but they bring your stuff to somewhere on campus to pickup, so it’s not as convenient. It’s very convenient, but it’s not cheap - they charge per box/suitcase/fridge etc. Also, because they store boxes for many students in one location, there’s no way to get to your stuff before the standard delivery date (ie they won’t store it for just one month)

If your DS ends up staying at Hopkins over the summer, he’ll end up either renting on-campus housing, or more likely, renting an off-campus apartment from someone who has a 12-month lease but won’t be there over the summer. In that case, he’ll have to just move it from one place to another with the help of friends, and dolly’s from the Housing office.
