It always gets me how there are almost no Asian people on the show...I mean, Orange County seemed to be full of Asians the last time I visited.

So what's new?

Only in American media-land will you see hospital staffs, universities, New Yorks, and Californias that are the most whitebread and un-Asian places in the world.

Bruce Lee was denied the lead role in what eventually became the TV series "Kung Fu" because producers felt that America was not ready for an Asian as a hero, especially an Asian male (after all, America is quite the patriarchy). Firstly, ponder that thought in your head and savour its idiocy and bigotry. Not ready for what? I mean, if the thought was that America was not ready for a hero who was former child sex offender, or a terrorist, that is understandable. What was Bruce Lee, and the people like him, guilty of? Being Asian. What a *ing crime, an abomination to humanity. Of course, America had absolutely no problems "accepting" Asians as clowns, idiots, monster-fodder, etc: William Hung became perhaps the biggest Asian-American star ever as a nationally and socially acceptable walking-talking racist joke. Even on "enlightened" films like Crash, Asians get the least favourable portrayal. That's the *ing best you can do?

So what's the solution? Take the power back. We honestly expect too much of non-Asian writers to sympathize and innately know what makes an accurate portrayal. They can barely adequately portray white people in the first place; how the hell can they express the feelings and thoughts of a different-but-same people? Asian-Americans have been Americanized enough to stop living the immigrant dream of the "nice job and good house"; that's simply not good enough anymore. Politics, media, entertainment... These are the power-broking areas that need to be taken up by just a few pioneers that have the guts to buck the family trend and pressure.
