Penn is NOT in a bad area! i'm so sick of all you people who are scared ****less of cities b/c you grew up in sheltered little suburbs where everyone's lawn is mowed to the exact same length.

then maybe...just maybe...the schools really are more alike than it seems. as i said, i loved UCLA, but i loved USC just as much and the fact that USC had the Music Recording minor really put me over the edge. and i didnt mention this, but also that USC had a really interesting electrical engineering focus (Integrated Media Systems) at a school whose multimedia and entertainment reputation is well known was really nice for me as well.

well, i didnt get that feeling so much, at least from engineering. in fact, that goes for the two UCs i seriously considered (the other being UCSD). from the outset, UCLA immediately set out to compare its engineering program with those of Stanford and Berkeley. some of USC's engineering programs (like EE, and engineering in general) are highly ranked as well, some top 10...no small bones. but they didn't bring that up at all when i went there. and in the end, really, rankings only go so far.

and as far as making students happy...USC's finishing up renovating Webb Tower, and they just recently started a program called Visions and Voices that's bringing about 70 arts and humanities events throughout the year--concerts, movie screenings, lectures, etc.

so again...maybe, just maybe...

I dont like florida

If the top 10 engineering ranking you're referring to is from USNWR, you'll notice that the metric that vaults them into the top (and distinguishes them from non-top 10 institutions) is the faculty resources -- obviously a result of their huge endowment. USC engineering's peer evaluations, student test scores, etc. are all more in line with schools ranked 15-20. The resource factor is an example of how rankings can sometimes be manipulated/skewed by being large for one data point and average for the rest.

Oh, and in the spirit of the original thread, based on academic quality (and not football teams or extracurriculars), my preferences:
UCLA
USC/UCSB
Miami

Of course, I may be somewhat biased...

Avoid the state of Florida if you can. The quality of education in the state compared to that of California is significantly weaker.

haha my floridian friends are astonished at why i would pay such an "expensive" price for an education at a state school when tuition is so cheap for them for the "same thing."

Yeah, I agree with kfc4u. When I went to both Freshman Admit Day and UCLA Orientation, the staff didn't mention ranking once. The closest mention of ranking was maybe "UCLA is a top university" or a "premiere university worldwide." Although, when I went to the Berkeley reception, they kept throwing at me that UC Berkeley is "the number one public university" so much that I was almost brainwashed.

Ucla
Usc
Ucsb
Um

1.usc
2.um
3.ucsb
4.ucla

1.USC (i had to pick between the two and it was tough but I am soooooo glad I picked USC!)
2. UCLA (still an awesome school, just not as awesome as USC! Fight On!)
3. UCSB
4. UM (just because I wouldn't want to go to university in that part of the country)

UCLA due to the white preppy factor at USC and the fact that they have more asian girls at UCLA that i would consider good looking. Both have nice campuses. It is easy enough to feel safe around USC within a few blocks, but go on the opposite side of the 110 or up Adams and you are in a not so nice area. That is when you will start noticing the hispanic gang graffiti and projects. Feels safe to some people, but not to others.

Otherwise USC for that fact that home games are right next to campus and not a 25 min drive away where you have to worry about parking, etc, and then having to drive home when you are utterly wasted from tailgating and you have a hangover (if you are an extreme party person of course)

UCLA: 40% Asian
USC: 23% Asian

I got into USC, and I think I have a pretty decent chance of getting into UCLA

so the decisions between the two is coming

I'm going to become a Fine Arts Major... and i just CANT decide!

Here are my factors

-cost
-scheduling (I dont want to be stuck in college for 6 years just because I could never get my classes... I heard UCLA is bad at that... is this true??)
-Which is best for my major
-School spirit (I heard USC is tighter of a 'family' and that even after college the help you out, and its just a more "home"-ish type of feel as opposed to the larger group at UCLA... I heard it was much less personal... and that USC cares more about individuals... opinions on it?)

And thats about it

Diversity doesn't really concern me.... My parents can afford USC.. not really... that well... but they can barely... so if UCLA is a better school... then I dont want to make my parents suffere the extra like 30 grand.

I just cant decide... I dont want to be stuck in college that my biggest concern

one thing abou USC too is that one of my good friends is going so I can room with her eliminating that bad roommate fear...

AGH so hard!!! please I need some opinions and comparisons a LOT Please e-mail me (mintsparklerz@yahoo.com) I would ESPECIALLY appreciate it from USC and UCLA students so they have first hand knowledge... tell me which is better to you and WHY....

As the old UCLA jokes goes:

What do UCLA and USC students have in common?

They both got into USC
