I am currently in the process of looking at potential universities.

However, I am stuck between a few schools, those being: USC, UCLA, Emory, and U Miami. I realize that the first three schools listed are of similar ranking, whereas U Miami is a bit lower in ranking. Yet, it seems as though UM is moving up the ranks each year and is fairly strong in the areas I wish to pursue (medicine/biological sciences/neurology/etc.).

With money and admission out of the question, where would YOU choose to go and why?

Have one child who is a senior at U of Miami and one about to be a freshman at USC. I have only positive things to say about U Miami. Friendly student body. Strong academics–particularly in pre-med. Great location and facilities. Anticipate USC being wonderful experience for other child. Both U Miami and USC have merit aid programs. Can’t go wrong applying to these terrific schools.

All great choices, but each person will pick a different one for different reasons. Some go to USC cause they love the urban/LA experience, other don’t go because of it. Every school has different aspects that people weigh differently. Don’t be persuaded by rankings particularly when they aren’t that different, these schools all fall within the great range, reputation wise. It sounds like you like UM but feel you have to justify it more because it is ranked lower. You will get out of education what you put into it, with even better results if you are at a school you really love. While they all share some similarities, they each have a very different campus feel - I would think one of those feels more right to you? Do you like urban, suburban, how much spirit, public/private and importantly, do they address your major plans well - those are some things I would tell my student to look at. Do what is right for you, not what sounds good/cool or impressive to your friends, this is your life and they will be doing their own thing too once college comes around. Good luck!

With money and admission out of the way - go to the school that fits you. Rankings are meaningless. Some of the world’s greatest contributions come from schools you’ve probably never heard of.

If you can afford it, visit each campus - one or two will immediately jump out at you. For my D it was USC from the campus, the climate, the large school environment and the people. She felt like she fit there. But she knew admissions offers were tough to come by so she considered a list of things she wanted out of a college and applied to that list as a back-up plan. Hope you find your perfect match!

Emory, Miami, USC and UCLA, in that order. USC and UCLA have become virtually indistinguishable and you’ll enjoy the more intimate feel at Miami or Emory.

USC, because it was the right major (somewhat unique), and a great fit. Our D had a choice between USC and UCLA (as well as several others) and it was USC from the moment her acceptance arrived. A cousin enjoyed Emory, no knowledge of UMiami.
