I applied for Duke well in advance of the Interview Deadline date (I think the date I applied was November 22nd) and I still haven't been contacted by an Alumni Interviewer. I left a message on my regional admissions officer's voice mail yesterday, but I haven't heard back. Any suggestions? I also filled out the online request for an interview on January 20th.

This same thing happened to me. I submitted my commonapp and supplement for Duke on november 27 and I haven’t received anything. I’m so incredibly worried about this. For those of you that received an interview, where do you live? And where is the online request for an interview?? I was not aware this existed.

From the Duke admissions website:

Regular Decision applicants should have filed either the Duke Student Supplement or the student portion of the Common or Universal Application by December 10, 2010. The remaining parts of your application should have been completed by January 2, 2011.

Students who did not meet the above deadlines may still have their names forwarded to alumni committees in their areas, but preference will be given to students who met the preferred deadlines.

* Upon receipt of your materials by the aforementioned interview eligibility deadlines, the alumni interviewing committee in your region will assign interviews on a first-come, first-served basis. Because of the large number of applicants and limited number of committee members, we cannot guarantee an interview for every applicant. However, committee members will make a concerted effort to contact the students in their areas who have met the interview deadlines. All interviews should be completed by February 15.

I am a Duke interviewer and I can tell you that if you live in a large metro area, your local alumni interview committee may be swamped with interview requests. (And if you are in a very remote location, there may not even be an interviewer close by.) As it says in paragraph 3 above, Duke cannot guarantee an interview for every applicant. Do not worry about it! Yes, it’s nice to get that extra Duke contact in, but it will absolutely not make a bad or middling application any better and it will not make a superb application any worse. Some applicants don’t even choose to have the interview.

My son is a current freshman at Duke. Last year he applied well in advance- before the interview deadline and requested an interview. He never received one. Despite this, he still got into Duke RD~ with a mid-March likely letter too! So don’t worry. Believe what devilbear states. Your regional interviewer is either swamped or else you are in a more remote area where interviews are difficult.

If we haven’t been contacted about a Duke alumni interview, should we contact the admissions person that covers our territory? Live near Philadelphia so it seems likely there is local alumni in this area. Would love to have an interview.

I applied on Dec 31st, did not request an interview and still got a call to have an interview last week.
I think it’s just coincidental that my area had available alumni. No biggie thing to worry about

Thanks devilbear. I live in Central NJ, so it’s extremely probably that the alumni in my area are swamped. However, in that case, wouldn’t you expect that those who got the application in first have priority? Mine was submitted well before the deadline, so it’s doubtful that mine was “last in line” so to say.

I am so bummed…I think the interviews are an important part of my app overall. They’ve been really strong (interviewers asking me for my follow-up contact, so they can get in touch in April…nice!) and my Yale interview went 2 hours.

Dag, I want a Duke interview so, so badly. :-(

I seriously want an interview. I’m an articulate person who interviews well, so this can really help my application.

So is the interview window closed? Everyone seems to be saying interview deadline has passed. What about if I know a local alumni who isn’t part of their normal interview team? Should I ask her to interview me or would it help if she wrote a recommendation on my behalf?

Yeah, I submitted my supplement before the deadline and also completed the interview request form (I’m in San Jose, CA). Someone told me the deadline for conducting interviews is February 15th, so I think the chances aren’t that great now. :(

I just received a call for an interview the other day (Wednesday or Thursday, can’t remember) after submitting my app before the interview deadline in December. The window hasn’t closed.

Sorry to hear that y’all. I’m not bragging, but I submitted everything on New Years day and got an interview. I wasn’t expecting it, I never even sent them an email or anything to request it. I knew that I had missed the deadline. To be fair I live in SF so that probably has something to with it (large urban area has many alumni). I hope it works out for you guys. If there is anyone like me I’d kinda like to know about that too.

thankyouforflying and others… what do you mean complete an interview request form. Didn’t realize there was one. Applied in mid-November and haven’t heard back about alumni interview. Now wondering if missed a form/paperwork.

^No, there was no form, just a December 10 deadline to apply to guarantee an interview.

I noticed TODAY I have an interview request since JANUARY 27th hahaha it was in the junk mail! i just email back the interviewer to see set a new date… I didn’t complete and interview request, applied Dec 25th and i am an international student

For those who are worried about not getting interviews, don’t fret about it since it’s a small part of the whole application and getting it depends on the availability of alumni around your area.
I actually applied after the December 10 deadline and did my interview last week. I didn’t send an interview request too.
