I am currently a first year freshman and attended a local state college in NY for my first semester. I have been planning to transfer to UMass for my second semester and then continue my education there. Recently I have been having second thoughts on this decision and don’t have much time to decide whether I should go or not since the semester starts really soon. I have always loved UMass and the campus, but don’t know if it is worth it to be in debt afterwards. If I were to attend UMass I would be paying over $40,000 each year there. But if I chose to stay home I would only have to pay $6,000 a year. Would it be beneficial to stay home and save the money for graduate school, but miss out on the college experience or do i go away to college and have to face the insane amount of debt I will be in when I graduate?
Stay in NY. Or transfer at the beginning of Junior year and only take on 2 years of debt. If you can get your major accomplished for only 6K per year that is what I would do. Or what about transferring for junior year to a 4 year but not local school in NY where tuition would be cheaper. What are your prospects of making big money when you graduate so you can dig yourself out of debt? If its iffy then I vote no debt. I understand that the allure of a college experience is very tempting but you don’t want to have to suffer for years after that.
Stay where you are. Or transfer to another NY school that’s not going to cost you so much.
