Which bank?

My daughter is attending Vassar this fall and she needs to open a bank account. Which banks are located on or around the campus?

I know HSBC is right down the street (on Raymond), within walking distance. I know my bf and his friends use it. I also believe there's a Bank of America nearby , but please don't quote me. I'm sure the few Vassar students on here will be more useful than myself.

It's an odd coincidence, but I just asked my daughter this question yesterday! The freshman orientation materials for the class of 2010 (on the Vassar website; class of 2011 version is not yet ready) indicates that the ATM on campus is an HSBC machine, and as noted by ceruleanyankee, the HSBC branch is one block off campus on Raymond Avenue. Unfortunately, HSBC requires that students be at least 18 to open any kind of account (even one where the parent is a co-applicant). My daughter won't be 18 until October, so I guess she'll have to wait.

i opened an HSBC account the other day and I am 17.

Yes I did read something about being 18 and my daughter will not be 18 until October. I'm thinking we might open the account at TD Banknorth. Even though the branch is a little distance from campus, they have free ATM withdrawals (they reimburse any ATM fees). Since my D will be doing work study, she'll set it up for direct deposit eliminating the need to go to the branch. My S has the same account and its been great.

Thanks for the input.

Thanks for your post. We tried to apply for an account online, and perhaps that's why we ran into a minimum age problem. We'll go to the bank branch instead.

I think HSBC is the one that is in the Retreat. I have Commerce, so I'm not sure. There is NO Commerce nearby, but I usually end up bringing enough cash to last me till the next time I go home, and I didn't have a job last semester, but direct deposit is always an option.
