Which CC in California is the best for Comp Sci?

As per title..

Is De Anza good?

Well, what are your goals? Generally speaking, the “best” school is the one with the most transferable pre-reqs for your target UC. (Berkeley’s probably the hardest CS program to find pre-reqs for, if that’s on your list.)

Use [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) to find which one has the courses to cover prerequisites for at your target UCs/CSUs.

If your target is Berkeley, a combination of Laney and Diablo Valley offers coverage of Berkeley CS 61A, 61B, 61C. Berkeley CS 61A and 61C are very hard to find at community colleges.

The one that offers the most pre-reqs for your intended major. As mentioned by the posters above. De Anza is supposed to be a great JC but I have no idea if it’s good for Compsci.

De Anza, I know a lot of UC Berkeley EECS transfer from there.

De Anza is most certainly the best place. I love it here.

Do you guys suggest De Anza or SBCC besides the number of transferable pre-reqs

Santa Barbara City College’s offerings match up well to transfer to UCSB, if UCSB is your target:
[ASSIST Report: SBCC 13-14 UCSB Articulation Agreement by Major](http://web1.assist.org/web-assist/report.do?agreement=aa&reportPath=REPORT_2&reportScript=Rep2.pl&event=19&dir=1&sia=SBCC&ria=UCSB&ia=SBCC&oia=UCSB&aay=13-14&ay=13-14&dora=CMPSC)

If you want to party, SBCC is where you want to go. I’d personally opt for De Anza.

Something else to keep in mind: De Anza is on the quarter system, as is its sister school Foothill College. If your goal is Berkeley (or Merced), you’ll eventually be transferring to semesters, so the articulations don’t line up quite right and you’ll probably be stuck taking some extra classes when it comes to series of things. It also means you’ll have a really late end date, which can make paperwork/deadlines stressful and means your UC’s summer session (if you need to catch up) might overlap with your CC spring classes.

But none of that matters if your favorite UC is on quarters. (Semesters to quarters is an easier transition, and I think most CCCs are on semesters anyways.)

UCBAlumnus covered the course pre-requisites pretty well. IMO, you should be focusing on transfer requirements if your ultimate goal is to get a 4-year degree.

Whether a given CC is going provide you with a good education - it all depends. Community colleges are much more focused on individual classes, so their departments are not as cohesive or regimented as a university’s. For that reason, it’s impossible to tell you how good a school is. It’s all down to the individual teacher. Some CC professors are hack jobs, and others are godsends - better than anyone you’ll encounter at a UC.

I went to Cal, and I’ve also taken some classes for fun at De Anza. The variation between teachers is greater than the difference between schools.

If you are from SoCal then Santa Monica college offers almost the major prerequisites to ucla compu sic program.
