I will be a freshman at MIT this fall and I am in the process of getting a new cell phone. Any suggestion?

My CPW hosts told me that reception in Simmons is almost non-existent (and I tried to make a call - you have to stand in just the right spot to do it!), but that the rest of the campus gets pretty good signals. I'd also be interested in hearing if there are any preferred providers, though.

There was a conversation about this several months ago in the MIT Livejournal community: http://www.livejournal.com/community/mitmit/71026.html

As you can see, all of them are sort of ok and sort of suck.

We asked this question last year and the consensus was Verizon. Son lives in EC and he's never had reception problems in the dorm or anywhere on campus. (There are some places where there is no service at all for any company.) I also have Verizon so our calls are free. He calls his girlfriend nights & week-ends, which is also free minutes.

im using T-mobile, if that matters

My S has Sprint and had no coverage problems anywhere while at CPW. The Livejournal seems to say Sprint coverage has improved markedly in the past year, so we'll stay with that.

Not much luck with Sprint in many parts of the Infinite and other indoors areas (like classrooms in Stata). Outdoors and walking down the street, Sprint service was fine, as it was in the dorm where I stayed. Folks seemed to have better luck with Verizon...

I have T-mobile also and during CPW my reception was better than at home :/
I stayed in Baker, by the way. It was consistent everywhere else I made calls from on campus.

I also have T-mobile and I am OK if I am in the Infinite Corridor, or outside, but in any big buildings (and in my office), it fails....

Verizon is usually pretty decent in the area

bump.

this thread is pretty old.

my contract will expire in August and i’d like to know which carrier gets the best coverage on campus (as well as in the fraternities across the bridge). I’ll be staying t west campus, if that matters at all.

i almost cussed my phone out when t-mobile didn’t get coverage across the bridge.

thanks in advance!

verizon. there has yet to be a strong black spot where i can’t get reception (simmons included).

Verizon is generally accepted to have the best coverage on campus.

so is verizon for sure the best?

anyone willing to object?

(just making sure. I’m singing away the next two years of my life here )

^^Can’t say about Verizon, but our AT&T coverage is just awful at MIT.
