I have one extra spot in my schedule this year and I can’t decide which class to take
Options:
IB Psychology
Adv. Marine Bio
Adv. Political Science
I’m already taking IB Biology, Chemistry, Math Studies, and English as well as Adv. US History & Spanish (I was in Latin but my school cut the program).
I am hoping to be a Molecular Biology/Biochemistry major in college. I took Adv. Psychology last year and enjoyed it enough to take it again, but I’m also contemplating going “out of my comfort zone” and trying something different (I know Political Science & Marine Biology aren’t THAT different, but I haven’t taken either before).
Thank you for any advice.
are you in an IB Diploma program?
If so you already have 6 IB classes. Why take more?
If not, think about whatever is most interesting to you and/or not tooo difficult so you can do well in your core classes.
@bopper I’m in IB but not getting the full diploma (I’m not taking IB History of the Americas or Theory of Knowledge).
I’m trying not to overexert class wise, but I’ve been thinking that I’m going to do Marine Biology because I know enough biology that it should be easy enough and I’m interested to see how I like it:)
that is a good reason to take that class…gives you a chance to explore that topic
IB math studies is not for students who need to take more advanced math in college. You may want to switch to IB math SL or HL.
@ucbalumnus would a biology major have to take advanced math in college?
Biology majors commonly have to take calculus and (sometimes calculus-based) statistics.
If you go into Computational Biology, Multivariate Calculus will be a prereq.
When I was signing up for classes I don’t think IB Math was listed… I think I’ll email to ask. I know that they’ve cut a lot at my school (IB Physics & Latin) so it might be gone but it can’t hurt to ask. Is Pre-Calc a prerequisite?
IB math SL includes precalculus, as well as an introduction to statistics and calculus, and is suitable for students who will need to take calculus or more advanced math in college.
If you plan on studying science in college you need Math SL, not Math studies SL.
As for your elective, pick the one you like best - it’s an elective.
I would say probably take Marine Bio. However, I know next to nothing about IB, so if that jeopardizes your chances of getting the IB diploma, don’t go for it.
