I am currently in my freshman year. This year, I have taken honors Biology, which is considered a sophomore-level class at my school. I have always been good at math and science, but this year something just clicked. I ended up loving the class. I had my course selection a couple weeks ago. I am scheduled to take Research Chemistry, AP World, Pre-Calc, Honors English, German IIII, and Band, along with the required PE course next year. I have received exceptional grades in all of these classes. However, after putting more thought into it, I’ve been thinking of taking regular chemistry and doubling up on sciences with physics, while dropping German. The physics is a traditional junior/senior-level class. I would most likely also be taking regular world history. I’ve heard from many of my upperclassmen friends that the work that class is really tedious. My parents said they would support me either way, so I have come here.
What are your thoughts? Thank you in advance.
NOTE: I also play one Varsity and one JV sport, if that makes a difference.
Is does your school have other AP classes for you interests (science) that you can take later? I was in a similar situation sophomore year and I opted out of the AP World class (only AP for sophomores) for the same reasons… tedious work and little interest. If I were you, I’d keep the schedule the way it is. Maybe switch out AP World if you don’t wanna take it but that German class will look good and it might be easier for you to do it continuously and not take a year off of language.
I know this is a lot, but I was thinking of also applying for the PEER program at my school. It seems like a great time, but it’s a non-credit class. What do you think of this?
I would talk to your HS guidance counselor about both your courses for next year as well as that PEER program. However, if you are looking towards top tier colleges you may want to take German 4 – check the recommended/required courses of any school you are interested in and be sure to meet those guidelines.
German 4 is for very selective colleges by senior year. So what kind of colleges are you thinking of?
If you double up in science, what classes will you take senior year?
