As a freshman, I am taking all Honors, band, and one AP Human Geography class. However, my teacher hasn’t been properly teaching us the subject and we learn almost nothing in the class. We are given assignments to complete but all we do is copy from another source. The same teacher teaches AP Euro, which if I continue is the class I’ll take sophomore year. If not, I’ll take World Civ, which I heard the teacher is great. Will college admission officers frown at me taking AP my freshman year and stepping down from it sophomore year? I plan on pursuing medical studies, and I don’t think AP Euro is necessarily a class I need.
If you don’t want to take AP Euro and AP World isn’t offered, I’m sure it would be fine for you to take all Honors sophomore year. Junior year is really when you need to up the course rigor, so make sure you satisfy any prerequisites needed to take more advanced courses by then.
“I don’t think AP Euro is necessarily a class I need.”
I agree with this and with @r2v2018. I think that you will be fine without AP Euro.
One of my daughters took AP Euro, and it was the most difficult and hard earned A- that I have ever seen in my life (she tells me that premed organic chemistry in university was harder, but that is very faint praise). I wouldn’t recommend taking AP Euro from a teacher that you are not fond of.
Thank you @r2v2018 and @DadTwoGirls !
You probably don’t need AP Euro - getting rid of an unnecessary AP leaves you room to focus on classes that go better with your major, and to achieve more in your EC’s. By the way, I’m a sophomore taking APHG and my teacher is really good, so let me know if you need some notes or help with the class!
@hsstudent13 thank you so much:)
I was in your same situation for history a few years ago. However, I stuck with the AP track even though the teacher wasn’t the best. Nothing changed the second year, but I think I was more aware of my situation and self-studied for the class and got a better score on the AP test. Despite this, I don’t recommend staying with the AP track in your situation. Clearly, history will not be very significant for your future paths. So taking a class that you will excel in and enjoy will probably be the best decision. Hope that helps? Good Luck!
