So right now I am an undeclared major in the school of undergrad studies, but i plan on transferring into the liberal arts school and majoring in eng/political science. What classes should i take next fall? I've heard that the professor is as (if not more) important than the class itself, so any advice on which professors I should try and take or stay away from??

I think we need more information.

Are you a freshman or…?
How many/which of your core classes have you gotten out of the way?

Whatever you do, don’t register for HIS 346K. I just got this lovely email:

The Department of History sincerely regrets that the above class has been cancelled and will not be replaced.

The paperwork will go through in a few days. If the class has not been dropped from your record, then go ahead and drop it and find another class as soon as possible. You should have several more days of registration times available.

Sincerely,

The Department of History Advising Office

So now my schedule is all screwed up. Suck.

Oh haha sorry! Yes, I am an incoming freshman, I have taken Psychology 101, and I made a 4 on the Eng Lang. and Comp. test and a 3 on the stats test which I think UT will take. And this year I am taking the Eng Lit. & Comp. test and so hopefully I will make a 4 on that as well. And I might possibly take speech over the summer if I can.

Talk to an advisor at orientation. They will have course planners and things for UGS students. There may be specific requirements for it. No one knows because it’s brand new next fall.

Just ask your BOYFRIEND. He has a pickaprof account :]

Hi BOYFRIEND. I also have a pickaprof account. i just don’t know how to use it… :(

Also log into UT Direct and look at the CIS(Course Instructor Survey) results. They have a older one from before 2005 and a new one for after 2005. If you don’t find much info on Pick a Prof, it definitely helps to gauge the teachers ability.

you should really use your pick a prof.
in my opinion it’s better than the ut survey thing because of the reviews.

go to ut registrar site and click on course schedules and fall 2009.
look up the classes you want.
then go to pick a prof, click on schedule and then type in the abbreviation and number and then at the bottom all the classes for that section will pop up and usually would show the grades and profs names and also the times.
if you click on them it automatically goes onto a schedule for you so you can see what classes you have on what days and so on.
the 10 bucks for a year membership is worth it.

this registration period i basically used pick a prof for the whole thing. it helps a lot.

as for what classes to take. you need to take a ugs class, because you are a freshman, so pick one that you like. i think it’s a good idea to get it over with in the fall, since there are more to choose from but if you cant find one that fits in your schedule then you can take it in the spring. i suggest doing one that counts as a writing course as well, because liberal arts requires you to have two writing classes so that would help you get two requirements out of the way in one class.

if you are not taking the government AP test take the first required government class 310L to get that out of the way ASAP if you wanna double major in government.

there are a lot of other requirements for liberal arts that you might want to look up if you want to start taking core classes. you have to take things like natural sciences and whatnot so it depends on what you want to tackle first.

also i would look into what English classes you can take as well especially if you get credit for the eng 4 AP test.

what else…

oh liberal arts requires that you take four semesters of a language so that is another class option.

hahaha. sorry that is a lot of information.
at orientation they can help you out more.

nerd855: thanks so much man. i had no idea you could already start searching for classes.

by the way may be i can get everyones help on this.
I am trying to transfer into McCombs internally next year. I already have all 5 of my business indicator classes finished. Can you’ll list some easy/intermediate classes that i can take to keep my GPA between 3.7-4.0? because all i need is 24 hours at UT to get into McCombs. I am thinking about majoring in accounting and minor in Economics/Government. so maybe i can start to knock out some of my minor credits

and I will have 52 hours by the end of this semester at a c.c.
I already took
economics (2301 & 2302)
governments (2301 & 2302)
english (comp 1 & 2)
history (1301 & 1302)
cal & cal 2
speech
BCIS 1405

So please list some GPA booster classes.

hedwig?? as in harry potter hedwig?
i hope so!
yaay harry!!

wow i’m a nerd.

yep as long as you have ut eid you can search, i think.
you might have to have the high assurance but i don’t know.

ahhh i love accounting. accounting should be pretty easy. (310f) and in the business lower division core classes accounting 311 is listed as a requirement.

i heard soc 319 sociology demographic something or another was easy but kinda boring.

soc 308 life and death decisions is a good class if you are interested in morality and whatnot. i have a low A at the moment with minimal studying. attendance is important though. if you miss 3 or more classes you get dropped a whole letter grade. (on pick a prof it has 63 percent As)

bio 309d the human body is easy peasy. its for non-science majors.

arc 308 architecture and society is amazing. it gets a little boring towards the end but the coursework is relatively easy. it deals with modern-ish architecture and less with the ancient stuff which makes it instantly more interesting. and the prof larry speck is pretty awesome.

and you could always take a physical ed class to help out with gpa a bit. it’s pretty hard to fail unless you dont go/do nothing.
