First off-- I’m not starting these clubs to pad my application. I’m genuinely interested in them. I’ve been thinking about starting either a Science National Honors Society or a Science Olympiad. The only other STEM club at our school is Mathletes. So for Science National Honors Society, we would fundraise for textbooks and lab supplies for our upcoming science AP classes, trips to colleges/museums, or charitable organizations. So far our school only offers AP Chemistry, but they said they are going to have AP Physics and AP Biology very soon… but they have a reputation of making false promises. We aren’t a rich school, so funding is almost always the issue. The problem with starting this club is that I’m also in class office, so I’m not sure that I would be able to keep up with two clubs. Science Olympiad seems a lot more straight forward, but our school is very small, so I’m not sure we would be able to be competitive. I’m equally interested in both clubs, but I’m having a hard time deciding. Which one seems more worthwhile?
It doesn’t matter which SOUNDS more impressive, but with which you can DO more impressive things.
Fundraising vs. competing, sounds like?
The one you think is more worthwhile.
Don’t make a choice with the view that one will be viewed as more “impressive”; it won’t be regardless of which you pick.
It makes no difference, both are fine. Do what is more interesting to you and/or the one which you feel has a better chance to flourish in your HS.
More fun to complete than to fundraise.
