Don’t give up on private colleges either. Most have great financial aid. It all depends on your parents’ assets/salary.

Wouldn’t someone with 40 credits be a transfer student? That seems problematic.

I am not gonna submit transcripts from community college. But yes, will fight if possible(other than AP) to waive for saving few bucks.
Fin aid seems tough with 150k parent on family of 7.

Thanks.

???

Are you in high school now? If so, then your CC transcripts are fine. However, if you’ve already graduated and went to a CC after high school, you can’t just not submit your transcripts…The schools will know that you went via the clearinghouse that tells them.

Are you in the US? you sound foreign.

P.S. even if you’re in high school. I doubt you’ll find any free rides in the NE. NE schools are more “need based” than BIG merit based.

CC courses were taken either in summer or after school. I am even thinking to do their graduation a month after high school graduation. (do you all think this is wrong to earn a 2 yr degree while in HS?). Yes, still in the sr. class near Buffalo NY.

@a2b2c21, there are certainly full ride merit awards in the NE and mid Atlantic area, (I have one) but deadlines are very soon or have already passed! (my school was Nov.1)

What is your GPA?

^^^

Are these competitive? What are they? Are they for OOS kids as well?

I don’t know of any assured full ride merit scholarships in the NE.

I know you have one from mid-atlantic, but he asked for NE. And, as you’ve said, UMaryland’s deadline has passed. Other deadlines are approaching.

It’s very hard to find full rides in the Northeast that aren’t super competitive. Since they are competitive, the student has no assurance of getting one. He needs to apply to some schools that he knows for SURE that he will get big merit! It’s ok to apply to some competitive, but you can’t depend on those at all!!!

Since you’re still in high school, then your comm college credits are FINE. You won’t be considered a transfer student even if you earn an AA by the time you graduate in May/June.

So…for now…let’s set aside the Comm College issue since it’s a non issue right now.

SAT 2220 (720M, 730R, 770W)

What is your GPA?

Are you a citizen or green card resident?

Fin aid seems tough with 150k parent on family of 7.**

Is that 2 parents and 5 kids? Or are there grandparents living with you? Are the kids all younger than you?

You may get some financial aid, but I think another concern is that your parents may not be able to afford their EFC. That can be a problem.

Your EFC will be about $30k, so even if a school gave you some financial aid, your parents may not be able to pay their EFC. If that is the case, then you will need big merit.

How much can your parents pay each year for you? $5k? 10k? 15k? more?

You have to send the CC transcripts. Period. What the college/university you apply to makes of that information is up to that institution, but you have to send the transcripts.

If you are very close to completing your AA, it probably is to your advantage to complete it. A number of high schools have this kind of “dual program” so you won’t be the only person who ever has done it. You should definitely talk to the transfer counselor at your CC about which colleges and universities have formal articulation (guaranteed transfer) agreements with that CC, and find out which colleges and universities actively recruit transfer applicants there. This will give you some more ideas.

Wishing you all the best.

Thanks Mom2…
A permanent resident, not a citizen yet.
Income from 1 parent, other parent just finished 4 yr college and in job hunting.
7 include grand parents.
Yes have 2 younger ones, a sophomore in same HS and a 7th grader.
Thinking if $10K to my college won’t make the rest starve.
Narrowing down…but will apply probably to 8/9 college.
U Pitt, Carnegie, Brandeis, Northeastern, how about Cornell ?
What are Macaulay Honors’ stats from past receivers? (do I have chance at Hunter?)
Oh and the GPA 3.94.

Thanks

which colleges are you referring to?

Double check with any schools that the AA would not cause problems, especially if any classes are taken after HS graduation. At my daughter’s college they cautioned scholarship recipients that had AP or concurrent enrollment credits against taking CC classes between HS graduation and starting college in the fall as it might have caused the student’s status to change from a freshman to a transfer student, making the student ineligible for freshman scholarships. This could be quite costly (it certainly would have been for my daughter as her freshman scholarship was several times larger than the highest transfer scholarship her school offers).

The way it was explained to us was that AP credits or classes taken as concurrent enrollment are not added to the college transcript until the end of the first semester which is why a student with a lot of credits still has freshman standing until the end of the first semester. But if the student takes classes at a CC after graduating HS and before starting college in the fall then the AP/concurrent credits are added to the transcript at the CC and, if the total credits are high enough, might then change the student’s standing into transfer instead of freshman.

May not apply to all schools but it does in our state, so definitely something to check out in advance. Freshman scholarships are generally much more generous than transfer ones.

Thanks for the info swimcatsmom. won’t be adding more in that case.

I believe you’re eligible for University of Pittsburgh’s full tuition/full ride scholarships based on your SAT score, and you’ll be automatically considered for the full tuition scholarship if you apply before January 15th. (However, you have to be invited to apply for the full ride Chancellor’s Scholarship or for a place in the university’s Honors College.)

[University of Pittsburgh: Undergraduate Admissions & Financial Aid](http://www.oafa.pitt.edu/universityschlrs.aspx)

Is it possible for you to retake the SAT one more time? Even a few more points in the M and CR sections can help when you’ll applying to merit scholarships.

xrcalico23, appreciated. I wish I could get 26 hrs in a day, could have made a retake. Took Math2 hoping 750 plus, will be trying hard to get a 5 on AP calc. AB and AP Phy., but AP’s are burning me along with my leading roles after school.

7 include grand parents.

I don’t think you can count the grandparents in your “household” number on FAFSA. Since any assets/income that they have don’t get included for aid, they don’t get counted in the household.

Either way…your family can’t afford their EFC, so you need big merit.

RE…the $10k…ask your parents. You need a firm number, you need to know what you’re dealing with.

U Pitt, Carnegie, Brandeis, Northeastern, how about Cornell ?

Schools like CMU, Brandeis, Cornel. (and maybe Northeastern) will be a problem. They will give you a high EFC and then you’ll be stuck.

The problem is this…your EFC is going to be at least $30k (probably more since I included the grandparents in the calculation, which I don’t think I’m supposed to do). You will be $20k short if your parents can only pay $10k (and you’re not even sure about that.)

So, you can try a couple of Cornell type schools, but expect them to be unaffordable.

You need to focus on schools that will give you BIG merit for stats. you also need to include some schools that will give you ASSURED big merit for stats…so you’ll know that you’ll at least have those in your hand.

To reduce your EFC to an affordable level, you need HUGE merit. Enough to cover “need” and then cut into EFC.

I think the grandparents can be included if they live in the parent’s home and more than half their support is provided by the parents.

They have been with us for long and are in 1040 for few years.

Wow. Working parents mean no good school. Got the $10K assurance, but as you say EFC is high. Are there any good school for neuroscience/PSY to my affordability? or are there good LAC to welcome me?

I agree that Pitt is a place you should apply to…but if you are a high school senior NOW, you are very close to the deadlines for applications to schools for their most competitive and lucrative scholarships. Get moving…you may miss the boat on some of these awards if you don’t apply VERY soon. For many the applications must be received before December 1. For some it’s as early as November 15.

Where are you an instate student? It is possible that your public universities have awards for instate students with your stats. Many public universities have honors colleges that are very good.

Agreed…no choice about sending the CC college transcripts. The schools are very clear. ALL college transcripts must be sent. What they do with them is up to the schools.
