I have applied to a bunch of colleges for a business major. Out of the ones i have gotten into, my favorites are UC riverside, cal state monterey bay, cal state san marcos, and cal state fullerton. I want to major in business and want a good education but the college atmosphere is important to me as well. I want to go somewhere kind of urban and more of a college town, and just like a well liked school. I am still waiting on cal poly pomona and i am appealing a rejection from sdsu. Any advice on where i should choose?
It’s a good idea to wait for that appeal response because SDSU has a very respected business school (if reputation matters most to you). If you are majoring in accounting, SDSU and Fullerton have AACSB-accredited accounting programs which is not very common in CA (but you can still succeed without going to SDSU or CSUF). However, also think about where you can see yourself living for the next several years. Visit each school if you are able to. If I lived in SoCal, I would be happy to be surrounded by all those nice options you have.
Riverside is not a nice area and my friend who went there didn’t really like it (although I don’t think she hates it either). SDSU would be my first choice if I were you. I went on a tour of Monterey Bay and the campus is very small and the location isn’t bad but it’s not really close to any of Monterey Bay’s attractions. If you’re looking for like the classic college experience I don’t think you’ll get it at Monterey Bay. Out of the places you’ve been admitted I’d go with Fullerton. I’m actually waiting to hear back from them but it’s a pretty decent school and it’s in the OC so the location is pretty good too and it’s also probably a good place to network.
Do not wait for SDSU, since appeals decisions can be as late as June/July, so you need to SIR to a school by May 1. CSU Fullerton and UCR have very good business programs, so I would choose either one of these schools. Much will depend upon which area of Business you want focus on and if both schools are affordable.
Agree.^^^^ SDSU will be having their “accepted students day” soon (where they begin their fall preview) and they are so impacted in the business school, so I wouldn’t wait for their decision.
Just want to agree with those who say do not focus on the appeal. Focus on the ones that are a real possibility. If by any chance the appeal comes through you will have to deal with that later, but for now you should try to visit Fullerton and Riverside and learn about their programs. Check out where you feel more comfortable. Riverside is a great university.
I think UCR is great! It’s a UC, and it’d be easier to graduate in 4 years than at some of the other schools. I’m not sure if this rumor is true, but I always hear how difficult it is to graduate from SDSU in 4 years because of how hard it can be to get classes at times. That’s just my two cents, though.
If you think you’ll be happier in San Diego, go for it!
If you don’t get in, I’d definitely consider Riverside if you’re going to stay in SoCal anyways. Fullerton is like 1 hour away from UCR, and it’s basically the same area but less prestige. Riverside is also a great school, I took a class there over the summer! The professors are great and the campus is kept in great shape.
SDSU parent with a son that is a CS major. He came into SDSU with 38 units of AP credit, was able to opt out of 4 classes and will graduate on time or earlier if you had not planned on doing study abroad. You can graduate at many schools in 4 years, if you keep on task, always double check your course requirements, are willing to take morning and evening classes and not too picky about the professors.
As I stated before, do not wait to hear from SDSU, pick one of the other schools which are very good options for Business.
