Which college would be the best fit for me? (Privates,CSUs,UC,etc)

I am a senior in high school with a 3.87 GPA (non weighted) and a 4.15 GPA (weighted). My SATs and ACTs aren't the best (1590 and 23) but I have retook my SAT this past weekend and feel a lot better about them. I will be attempting the tests one last time in December. I am team captain for my high school football and wrestling teams. I work for pay at the community book store and farmers market and have 80+ hours of community service done. I have six years of math finished (algebra I - AP Calculus BC), I have 4 years of English (including AP Lang and Comp.), 4 years of science (Biology,Chemistry,Anatomy, and physics), 3 years of social studies ( including AP government), 2 years of Spanish, and 2 years of Fine Art ( ROP architectural design and ROP Graphic Design). I would like to attend Cal Poly SLO but I don't know if my test scores qualify. Which colleges are the best for for me?

Do you know what you want to major in? Can your family afford to pay for a private college? Some privates (University of Pacific, Redlands, Cal Lutheran) will give you merit aid, but the cost will still be in the $35-$40,000 range.

Can you study really hard for your ACT to bring it up to mid-range for Cal Poly? Average ACT score was 27 for incoming freshmen in 2011, I’m not sure what it was last year.

Are you in the top 9% of your class at school? If so, you’d be UC eligible via the ELC path. However you might not have your choice of UCs.

[University of California - Local path (ELC)](<a href=“University of California Counselors”>University of California Counselors)

As you note, your SAT/ACT could be an issue for SLO - though, you note you feel good about your recent retake. Also, major selection can have a huge impact on where CP draws the line. This table will show you who got in last year.

Also,SLO uses an admissions algorythm that’s unique. They heavily weight the courses you took - giving bonuses for extra math, science and, believe it or not, english.

As your ap sits (no boost in test scores) I give you 60/40 odds of admission.

The other CSUs won’t be an issue. (assuming you’ve checked all the a-g boxes)

As far as UCs, you can probably make Merced, Santa Cruz and maybe Santa Barbara as you sit. You’ll need 250+ SAT bump to be in contention for Davis, San Diego.

I think being involved with AVID will help quite a bit with UC admissions and the Cal States give a boost to kids that qualify for EOP. I think your HS counselor can help with you that.

Thanks everyone, I was just curious in seeing what colleges I was qualified for. Hopefully my SATs are higher this time. I am top 9% and already am trying to go through ELC. Also I am in the puente program too which I hear UC’s like. I’m going to talk to my counselor today to have her help with my apps. Feel free to post any other advice and recommendations.

If you are in the top nine you are guaranteed to get into a UC, the default UC is Merced if you are not admitted to the school of your choice.
My D goes to SLO and absolutely loves it there. Your GPA is good but like NCalRent said you will need to bring up your test scores to better your chances. You could also be on the cusp for San Diego state as well if you are out of their service area. Cal Poly Pomona, Chico, Sonoma are other CSUs you may want to put on your list. What are you going to major in or have you made a decision yet?
