I just started at Barry University in August 2019 but due to financial issues I might have to transfer. I want to
Major in cyber security but no other school offer this degree as an undergraduate. I was looking at FIU and I was thinking about majoring in a BS in information technology. I want to stay in the Miami area. I moved from NYC and it’s just me alone with no help. What college would you recommend? Nova/UM is out of the picture lol they more expensive
What is your cost at Barry? How much can you afford? You would be considered on out of state student at FIU. Can you afford that? Are your parents back in NYC?
it’s 41K a year at barry. and FIU is 25 a year for instate students, I wont be considered out if state, I would be able to afford FIU because my financial aid is more than there tuition ad my parents don’t live in America.
So you cannot afford Barry anymore? I think you need to go where you can afford that also meets your location and career goal criteria. FIU will be affordable and there is a lot you can do with a degree in Information Technology
You need to speak with the admissions and financial aid offices at FIU. You need to know for certain that you would be an in-state student and that the aid would cover what you need to have covered.
Lots of places offer programs in cyber security. You just might not be using the correct search terms to find them. You are correct that cyber security programs normally are inside the computer science departments, so start looking into the details of what each of the FL (since that looks to be where you want to be studying) offers. If you are a FL resident, you should also look at the community colleges.
i can’t afford it because I need a co-signer for 4K a year but I emailed FIU financial aide office and spoke with them. they’ll get back to me next week and as far as being a resident of florida, i recently changed my driver license so I became one but If i attend a CC i won’t have housing and I need a college with housing
You might be living in FL, and have a FL driving license, and a FL voter registration, and work and pay income tax there, but not be considered an in-state resident for tuition and fees purposes. Usually state residency for that is based on where a student’s parents live. So you need to verify your in-state/not in-state status at FIU.
Why do you need a college with housing? If you study at a CC you could find an apartment to share or a room to rent somewhere.

How did you determine what your financial aid would be a FIU?
Are you a US citizen or permanent resident? If not, you won’t get a lot of aid from FIU even if you are a state resident. It takes a year of residency of the student’s parent or the student (if over 24) to become a state resident FOR TUITION purposes. You can be a resident of Florida, get a license, register your car, get a fishing license, a library card, register to vote (if you are a citizen) and still not get instate tuition in Florida. Read the requirements carefully.
Several of the Florida community colleges have dorms. Santa Fe (UF), Valencia (UCF), and Florida State CC (FSU) all do and have close transfer agreements with the ‘neighbor’ college. They often share the dorms with the university, share some student activities, even classes. Some Florida community colleges now award 4 year degrees, but not in all subjects. They are no longer ‘Grade 13 and 14.’
i checked and I am consider an FL state resident already. I am a citizen. I need housing because I am still looking for a job around this area and if I don’t get one then financial aide covers room and board so living on campus was the plan. @twoinanddone @happymomof1
