I'm looking for colleges where social life isn't totally dependent on being Greek, and where the people there are kind of kooky, there are few cliques, aren't total rich snobs (I know that not everybody who's rich is a snob; I'm friends with three people who are set for life but they're totally modest, don't like to mention it/throw their money around), people from different ethnicities actually interact, and the preppy sort isn't everywhere.

I was interested in a lot of colleges before I came to CC and realized from the comments here that some of them (Duke, Vanderbilt, Emory) had a rep for being preppy and major Greek schools.

So any suggestions on this? Help is mucho appreciated :]

UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, basically all the UCs (maybe except for Santa Barbara, lol) definitely have diversity. Washington U in St Louis is good too for you standards

I’d argue princeton. there are a few polos floating around, but from what i’ve seen it’s about as laidback as any ivy can get. umich is supposed to be that way as well, what about usc or cornell?

One of the factors which was influential in my daughter picking Vassar was that they have NO Greek life at all, no sororities, no fraternities, no athletic scholarships. It is definitely not preppy at that campus.

Musicmom, I should have mentioned Vassar - I got in & visited there and loved it, but I’m pretty conservative and it seemed a bit too liberal there for me. But to the OP - definitely check it out there.

I’d suggest you check out Mini’s entitlement index … which looks at data from schools and how many kids went to private school and how many receive financial aid. In general the more economically diverse a school is the less preppy it is (or at least a large portion of the school is). Small, rural, high-entitlement index schools are likely to be very preppy. This info is not iron clad by any means … but may provide some good pointers …

i’ve heard from several friends that washu in st. louis students tend to have lots of money if you know what i mean.

at Santa Clara (california private school) the frats were kicked off campus ten years ago or so. only 5% are involved, and you really can’t tell those who are. we have a diverse student population, and even though some students are very well off, very few flaunt it.

Miami U of Ohio, by the way, is the biggest prep school i have ever laid eyes on.
