Which colleges in your opinion are the least preppy?

Shouldn’t it really be snobby/arrogant/jerks instead of “preppy”? Preppy is just a characterization by looks (mostly clothing). I know plenty of people who would be classified as preps by the way that they dress, but are really nice people. I also know jerks that don’t dress “preppy.”

Oberlin. We definitely have some kooky people.

For the public universitites within Texas, they fit the OP criteria. OP should have no worries. I guess you could state/argue that some of Texas private universities would not fit OP criteria.

And I love Oberlin! Definitely looking forward to applying and hopefully attending xD

@Coolbreeze: Still, though, I got an extremely preppy vibe from Austin. But the school’s so dang huge that I’m sure I can find other people lol

Preppy is not Abercrombie. Preppy is a lifestyle - that brings up images of the WASP tradition and old money families. Preppy people wear Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, J. Crew, Lacoste, Lilly Pulitzer, Vera Bradley, etc.

Preppy kids also have yachts and can vacation in Iceland or Aspen during a weekend and hit up the country club twice a week. Or something like that.

Abercrombie is merely “trendy.” You won’t find true preps wearing Abercrombie. Today Abercrombie actually announced that it was shutting down Ruehl, which is an even higher-end and more expensive (and more pretentious and obnoxious) copycat of Abercrombie, but geared towards a Greenwich Village theme.

Preppy people in this sense are correlated (but NOT causated) to wealthy people, but wealthy people are not necessarily preppy. Many preppy kids come from expensive prep schools where their parents pay the equivalent of college tuition or higher (more or less) each year to send them there (albeit, there are some low-income kids at prep schools on scholarship, but not many).

Thus, schools that are the least preppiest would most likely not have as many rich people (that is, not a top private university) and more kids on financial aid/Pell grants.

I guess my school will not fall into the category of “non-preppy” that the OP may be seeking.

Does anyone actually know people like this? I live in Connecticut and thus know many rich people, but none are rich enough (or fling their money around like that enough) to do anything that extravagant. It’s more like they own a second home on Martha’s Vineyard or something.

I have a friend exactly like that. xD
