I am going to be a Junior in college this fall. Eventually, after graduation, I would like to be a communications director. I have done basic research and know that a communication director is responsible for managing and directing an organization's internal and external communications. Directors of communications supervise public relations staff, create communication strategies, etc. I have never really taken a business class before and would like to try a simple economics class.

Say I like the class: Major in Spanish and take business classes on the side? I think I would learn a lot of important things as opposed to taking general communications classes. On the other hand, I’m worried that when I apply for jobs, I won’t have that communications degree employers are looking for to get my first couple of jobs.

Another option is to continue with Spanish and Communications, work for a few years and then go back and get an MBA so that I can learn the business skills and show I am qualified to be a manager of a communications department within a business or organization.

Here is a sample of Communication Major type classes offered at my school:

Communication and Human Behavior
Theory and Practice of Persuasion
Rhetoric and Technology
Communication and Public Opinion

Business Classes I would take on the side: (there is a certificate in Business, but I have heard from several people at my school that they start at 4.0 GPA and go backwards in awarding certificate/acceptance)

Introduction to Microeconomics
Marketing Management
Organizational Behavior
Introduction to Financial Accounting
Brand Management and Strategy
Introduction to Finance
Marketing Communications

(I am for sure majoring in Spanish because I enjoy the language and would like to travel. I also believe this skill will be marketable to potential employers. I’m just wondering which combination would help me achieve my goal).

Thoughts?
