Hello, I am an incoming freshman at UCSC. Before my orientation it's recommended to get an idea of what classes I want to take by taking a look at the Fall class available. As I was looking at these classes, the more I searched the more confused I became.

I am a Neuroscience major. I know I am to satisfy the school's General Ed classes and the major's prerequisites. For my major I need to take a Calc based math class, Bio, General Chem, Organic Chem, Physics, and Biostatistics
(Where I am getting this info from: http://undergrad.pbsci.ucsc.edu/programs/mcdb/documents/NBIOchecklists1213_003.pdf)

There are also a myriad of general ed sections for the school
(Seen here: General Education Requirements)

All this left me with a question: Where do I find the balance between the two? What's the recommended course of action?
There's bunch of 5 credit classes I need to take for GEs. Do I take just my math+gen chem class for Fall quarter and rest of the schedule with GE classes?
I know some of these questions might seem like nobrainers but I am truly lost so any and all help/advice will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

You will be required to take the Core Writing class for your college of residence your first quarter. You should try to take the calculus you tested into, and perhaps one of the bio or chem classes. On the quarter system, you are looking at three classes per quarter. Make sure you have a few options figured out in case you don’t get into the first class of your choice. This is where it is a good idea to figure out a General Ed course that may be of interest to you. Remember, there will be many life adjustments to make if you are an incoming Freshman, don’t overburden yourself academically your very first quarter. If you are attending orientation and bring your own computer, you can attempt to register for your classes without having to wait in line.

So I would want to adhere to 3 classes per quarter (including the core writing class for first quarter)?
Also, as an example General Chem shows “General Education: SI, IN, Q” does that mean that by taking this class I would be satisfying all 3 GE sections? Or does that mean it satisfies one of these 3?

Thanks!

As a fellow biological science major I would recommend u take a math class, a chem class and your core class. And u would receive all the GEs credits listed for that particular class. As for the balance between GE and major requirements what I did was I took 2 major requirements courses a quarter (math and chem freshman year, biology and chem sophomore) and one GE until I completed it all. This was after completing the core class and writing 2 of course
