Which courses to take for a UC math transfer?

Hi.

I applied to De Anza for an ADT for Math and I need to register for courses for the first semester/quarter, but I don’t know which courses I should sign up for. I won’t be able to take any math or english courses since i havent taken the placement tests yet and wont be able to take them until the end of August.

I am planning on transferring to a math major at a UC most likely, so I wanted to know exactly which other courses I can/should take before I transfer. Should I do the IGETC courses, or would it be better to take courses that directly relate to my degree? If it’s the second option, what courses do I need to take other than math and english?

Also, exactly how many courses should I take in the first quarter?

Knock down as many GE courses as possible towards the IGETC completion.

Ideally, you can take in the first semester:

Calculus 1
Eng freshman
GE
GE

The following semesters, you might want to start the physics (only for UCLA and UCI) and CS (UCLA) sequences (check assist.org if you need to start the CS sequence in your first semester as you may have to take a CS intro class to get into the CS prerequisites).

Personally, I didn’t take the physics nor the CS sequences because I hate physics, but I couldn’t be a competitive transfer for UCLA and UCI as a math major.

In order of priority:

  1. Base requirements for transfer: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/transfer/preparing-admission/minimum-requirements/index.html and any campus or division-specific base requirements (listed on ASSIST and/or campus web sites).
  2. Major preparation (listed on ASSIST).
  3. IGETC or campus-specific general education requirements (there may be some general education courses required if you do not have IGETC, and IGETC is nice to have in most cases, but not required in most cases). Note that some of the above courses, if chosen carefully, will also fulfill IGETC or campus-specific general education categories.

Here are some example ASSIST pages from http://www.assist.org :

@peanut101 I don’t think I’ll be able to take any math or english courses right now since i havent taken the placement tests so just four other GE courses would be fine right? For example, if I take a foreign language, a lab science, an arts course and sociology or something, that is a good set of courses, correct? I’m moving there from a different country and the education system here is completely different so I don’t exactly know what to do which is why i’m sort of really confused…

Also, would it make a difference if I take or don’t take an Honors course? What’s the difference when compared to normal courses?

Thank you for this though, your answer was pretty helpful

For a math major, French, German, or Russian could be a helpful foreign language, since math research papers are often written in those languages (mostly an issue at the PhD level).

At some universities, math majors are required to take some science courses (see the ASSIST reports), so you may want to choose your science courses for GE purposes with those requirements in mind.

You can get an unofficial assessment about your math placement with these quizzes: http://www.math.buffalo.edu/rur_index.html

Since you are coming from a different country, you can get the foreign language requirement out of the way by showing your foreign high school transcripts (2 years minimum) to the CC.

If your placement tests are in August, you will get into a math class in fall. You need to start the math sequence asap because there are 4 math prerequisites, and Calc 1 will unlock the Physics sequence (if you are interested in taking it).

Also, you might be put into Eng 99 after your placement test, so you’ll have to take that in fall.

Assuming that the language of instruction there was not English. Some other places, like England, do use English.

Okay yeah I think that might work
The language of instruction was English since we’ve been doing Cambridge O Levels and A Levels, but I think doing another language for 3 years will count I guess?
Idk I’ll try something out.
Thanks guys!

https://www.deanza.edu/articulation/documents/ge-igetc-lote.pdf describes how you can fulfill of the IGETC-for-UC foreign language category.

If you have at least two years of language other than English in high school and last term has a passing grade, you fulfilled the IGETC requirement. You just need to show your advisor at De Anza your hs transcript.
