Which dorm to apply to as an incoming Freshman?

I’m stuck between listing Paterson, Wall or Greenbaum as my top two. Monroe/Sharp just seem too small and kinda gross for me. I’m gonna major in something liberal arts, either Poli Sci or IR, don’t smoke and don’t care if people do or not just not in the dorms. Id obviously like to go to parties sometimes but I don’t want that to be my only side activity and have no interest in going greek. Politically and socially I’m more liberal and the bigger the room is the better. I’d also prefer to share a bathroom with as little people as possible. Which would be the best fit? Initially I was interested in Butler but it seems not many people like it. I’m a male btw.

Fake edit: completely forgot about Warren, what about that?

thanks for asking this question: would also like to know more about differences between dorms at Tulane

Here is an older thread that discusses all this. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/1077367-best-freshman-dorms-at-tulane-p1.html It doesn’t include Greenbaum because that had not been built yet. @PoliSciGuy23 as far as choosing between Paterson, Wall and Greenbaum I think it depends on how much you want to be in the residential college style dorm where the prof lives in the dorm as well and the residents are more involved in the issues concerning the dorm. Those would be Wall and Greenbaum, while Paterson is of course the “wellness dorm” with programming like yoga classes and the like. Also Paterson is a mix of hall bath style and suite style, so I am not sure you are guaranteed one or the other. Greenbaum and Wall are strictly suite style. Hall style have the bathrooms cleaned by campus services, suite style you are responsible for your own cleaning. Since you want to share with as few people as possible and, I would guess, have more control over the cleaning of the bathrooms, you might want to opt for the suite style.

Greenbaum is of course very new, Wall is still newish, and Paterson is old. That doesn’t make it bad by any means, some of the rooms are quite large in fact. It just isn’t as cookie cutter as modern dorms tend to be. One could say it has character. Also, just to mention, Wall and Paterson are close to each other and the food, aka Bruff. Greenbaum is farther away on the opposite side of campus, but at Tulane that just means all of a 5-7 minute walk. I have heard that the rooms in Greenbaum are a little larger than the ones in Wall, but you would have to check with housing about that to confirm or dispute that. I can’t imagine there is enough difference to really be material.

I know I posted a thread in past years where I went into detail on each dorm. I will keep trying to find it. Also, I don’t think there is any way to control if you get short suitemates. :)) Sorry, just having a bit of fun at your expense. Just meant good-naturedly.

My D lived in Wall freshman year, and she really liked it. The rooms are significantly bigger than those in Sharp/Monroe, and the bathroom is shared only with the other room attached to it. Plus there is a sink in the room, which is nice. The only thing that is better about a hall bathroom is that the hall bathrooms are cleaned by University staff; when you have a bathroom that is just for two rooms, you are responsible for cleaning it yourself. I don’t know anything about Greenbaum - it was built later.

I think Greenbaum is very similar to Wall as far as the room arrangements. Of course, it is also the only other freshman dorm that is an LLC, which I think stands for Living/Learning Community. Tulane’s version for a very, very old arrangement begun at British universities called residential colleges. Several US universities like Yale and Rice have been doing this for some time, and now many are doing what Tulane is and shifting to it on a wider basis, especially as they build new dorms.

Wall has the biggest room, suite style and you at most share your bathroom with 3 other people. My son lucked out and only shared his with on e person because his roommate left in October. he loved living in Wall, the only issue he had was with the really bad storms last week, the rooms that are accessed from the outside flooded a bit. But he loved being able to walk out his door and be outside or leave the door open to let fresh air in on nice days.

Greenbaum is also suite style and is the newest dorm. It is right next to The Boot, so depending on how you look at it, this could be wonderful or tragic.

Patterson has community bathrooms. With suite style bathrooms you are responsible for cleaning them. The community bathrooms are cleaned by a service.

Don’t know much about Warren, except they also have communal bathrooms.

Make sure you don’t miss the application deadlines for Wall and Greenbaum should you choose to apply to live in either dorm.

Have you sen the video tours of each dorm? Greenbaum does not have a video, these were done a few years ago.

Actually Paterson (one “t”, I made that same mistake for years), has both hall style baths and suite style. It’s an odd building that way. Warren is similar in feel to JL, as far as architecture. It is co-ed though. And it is a mix of sophomores and freshmen.

When we were at Destination Tulane a couple of weeks ago, our tour guide took us to the Model dorm room in Paterson. He explained that the rooms in Paterson which open to the inside (traditional rooms?) were given to freshman -and had an extra layer of security (check in at the front desk). The rooms that open to the outside (suites?) were for non-freshman. Not sure if that’s 100% true, but seems to make sense.

I think that is exactly it, @VAmomof4. Thanks for the detail.
