For those of us who know nothing about Brown, can anybody give some advice about Freshmen dorms? Which are the best and why? Which are the worst and why?

Don't worry, you can't choose anyway.

The freshman dorms are all a bit different in terms of what you get and what the perks include. Here's a synopsis of the main freshman dorms:

Keeney Quad: The largest freshman dorm. Easy access to campus, dining hall and gym (there's an exercise center in the Quad). Certainly the most social of the freshman dorms.

Perkins: Far away from Main Campus. Traditionally considered the best freshman community experience (basically the distance issue means that everyone bonds just that much more). There is a legend floating out there in Brunonia that Perkins produces the greatest number of long-term, romantic relationships of any freshman dorm.

Hope College: On the Main Green. The oldest dorm on campus (the second building constructed on the Brown campus back in the late 1700's). Typically everyone who has stated an interest in environmental science gets housed in Hope. During Spring Weekend, Hope College kids get free tickets to all the concerts on the Main Green.

Emery-Wooley: Ugly as sin from the outside, but pretty convenient in a lot of ways. There's a dining hall and an exercise center in the basement, and there's one bathroom assigned to every two rooms.

Andrews: Also called "Hotel Andrews." Supposedly all the children of VIP's get housed here. All rooms come with sinks. Many rooms also have lofts and skylights. If you request a single sex hallway, you'll end up living in Andrews.

Littlefield: The smallest freshman dorm. Littlefield has the largest rooms and largest closets of any dorm on campus. Located near the dead center of Brown. With a little ingenuity it's not hard to get up on the roof of Littlefield, and from there you have a beautiful view of Providence and Main Campus.

Also an interesting sideline regarding Keeney:

There is a system of tunnels under Keeney, accessible by a trap door in the basement and a number of hidden rooms on the uppermost floors of the building. You need to move ceiling tiles in some of the hallways to find the doors to the hidden rooms.

badass, I can't wait to explore that.

And damn I want a sink. A gym closeby is a nice attribute too... AGH I can't believe we have to wait till AUGUST for our housing assignments. I want to know now...

thanks for the info argus...and yeah...i really want more stuff from brown...

Yeah I'm getting anxious to get more material from Brown as well. I want to figure out schedule, and where I am living, and my roommate, and getting the **** out of my town.

I practically want to start this summer semester...

What's the deal with NP3? Is that a freshman dorm? I heard it's nasty.

yeah it is lol

i stayed there for adoch...gross lol

Where is NP3?

it was a good 5 minute (at least) walk from the main campus/green kinda near andrews, but farther

oh crud, I expressed interest in environmental science. How bad is Hope College, it being like, the second oldest building perplexed

I would think the location would be very nice. It said (on the website) that it's been recently renovated. I've heard it's one of the better dorms, actually.

Does anyone know which halls are the ones designated for substance-free housing?

I think they're near Andrews?

I want to start picking my schedule and know my roommate...

I'd like to know who my roommate is as well.

I pity my roommate. If it's anyone here, I apologize in advance for the slopiness and terrible music.

Yeah, my roommate will hate me after a week.

I am ridiculously loud, obnoxious, sometimes flamboyant, opinionated, underclothed, messy, perfectionist, Catholic. One messed up kid.

This is going to be interesting.

yeah, me too, im terrified my roomate will hate me...although i think Brown is known for its idiosyncratic personalities...
