Hello CC,
I am having trouble with deciding my courses for next year, because I am stuck between two classes. For the past two years of high school, I have taken Orchestra. But next year I am considering to drop it to take a business elective called Intro to Business and Marketing, because it pertains to my potential major. Would universities look down on me for quitting something half-way through hs showing “lack of comittment” if I drop orchestra or would they be fine because I am exploring different carreer options by taking a bus elective. I also would like to say that I am a dancer outside of school who has been dancing for 10 years, and am now prepping for a huge solo performance, so I’m not sure if I’ll have time for orchestra. Pls I help cause I need it.
If business is what you want to do, I would say take that class. It’s more useful to you and it’ll show that you really do have an interest in business and marketing.
That class is considered a “fun class”. It’s typically very, very light content-wise. Take it if you want to have a “breather” during your day. UVA wouldn’t mind if you have a rigorous schedule - what else are you taking?
Is there no “academic” or “art” class you can take beside Orchestra?
I agree with others that the best class is the one you will enjoy the most. Don’t take the business class just because you think it will look better to colleges for a future major. Don’t take orchestra just because you think it will be held against you by colleges if you drop it now. You need to make sure you enjoy your electives and the college that is right for you will be the one that wants you to be happy with those electives too.
I’d choose between Physics DE and AP CS. Three sciences in a semester is overdoing it. Replace it with a social science - just noticing you have no history nor any so I’ll science class.
I vote for orchestra. You have taken it for two years already which suggests that you are proficient and really enjoy orchestra. You might even want to join the orchestra at college. Why business when you are good in music and dance! There may be connections between music and business that you could explore. My bias after working with many business majors is that business is mind-numbing. Accounting is cool.
^Err what?? Comparisons are generally a poor idea for an essay. Those don’t need a gimmick, especially a ‘stretched’ one like this. You need to start with an anecdote about Yourself, then develop its resolutions through analysis, action, reaction, reflexion. If anyone could have written it then it’s not the right essay.
Yeah I agree its not about my college essays. I just want to have a strong schedule and I’m deciding on my classes. I have other things that i could write for essays
I’m no expert on course selections, though I’d take orchestra if I were you. I was considering taking Latin in addition to Spanish this year, and the only way I could do that was if I dropped orchestra, and I decided against it. It gives me a break during the day.
I think you should take orchestra because 1) it shows your commitment to playing an instrument, 2) music has great affects on the brain and 3) your schedule is extremely rigorous, and this class would give you a breather. If you really want to show colleges you are interested in business and marketing, I think you should reflect it through your ECs. Participate in DECA (if your school offers it), maybe work in your school store, take a business class at a college, etc.
The only way I can participate in business clubs like DECA and FBLA is if I take a Business course. I don’t know, I’m planning to keep orchestra and maybe take AP Economics instead of AP Chem because 1) I already have a dual-enrollment science 2) AP Economics would be the closest to taking a business class
But I gotta see, I have till Jun 1st to finalize my course selections
I agree that DECA and FBLA are better to demonstrate your interest in business without sacrificing academic rigor. Ask your GC if taking AP Economics would allow you to participate in those.
