Which engineering program to choose?

As I mentioned on my other thread: “I called RPI today about it (financial situation) and they told me to write a letter so they could reevaluate me. I will see what results from that.”

I definitely considered Cooper Union. I felt like it was a high reach and initially I didn’t want to stay in New York City at all. The weird thing was that I applied to schools more competitive than that out of state. o.O

I am still considering CUNY.

@mom2collegekids You are correct.

I’ve read Mom2’s opinions on other threads and it seems to me she is typically well informed, level-headed, candid and most of all…accurate. So I’d think a lot about her suggestions if I were you. And community college can quite an advantageous avenue to get to where you want to go. Plenty of reputable universities glady accept candidates from community colleges.

Definitely. Mom2 certainly knows more than most people about college and she always has valid points. I am trying to think with my head and not with my heart because I applied not knowing my EFC or what scholarships I was going to receive and now it’s time to think fast.

I got into Syracuse today and their award package is horrible. I almost think they made a mistake. :/

What was in it?

Federal Work Study $2,700.00
Federal Direct Subsidized Ln $3,500.00
Federal Direct Unsubsidized Ln $2,000.00
Dean’s Scholarship $6,000.00
Syracuse University Grant $3,000.00
Total Aid Offered $17,200.00

Worst thing ever.
Total Cost of Attendance 54,390.00

I would go to Drexel if i were you,
I got in to Drexel, NEU ,RPI, and i am still waiting on a few schools and right now i am going to go to northeastern if the other schools dont work for me. But if i didnt apply to NEU i would pick Drexel.

Drexel has an amazing campus in the city, it has great engineering with co-op, RPI is in the middle of nowhere, but i guess if you like rural areas you would like it.

Both are great engineering schools, but Drexel is better overall academically for sending kids to top MBA pograms and grad school after their undergrad program.

Drexel has one of the best job and grad school placements in the country

I want to major in engineering in college and i have been accepted in to NEU, DREXEL, RPI, but i did not apply to columbia and it is my favorite school of them all.

should i go to one of the before mentioned engineering schools, or go to Hofstra or Arcadia and do the Columbia Combined 3-2 plan with columbia to gain guarunteed admission to Columbia SEAS.

is it worth the risk of going to a mediocre school to gain a degree from Columbia SEAS?
is it worth giving up the “college experience” to get a mechanical engineering degree.

does going to columbia SEAS give me a better shot at grad school than NEU?

Thanks!,
will the other kids look down upon me for going to an easy school and then transferring, and will this affect my chances of making friends?

I have heard that the other kids will look down upon transfer students.

Do the Columbia College kids look down upon the kids in SEAS?

is it worth going if my chances of making friends are not good?

I want to think about costs in mind and without cost in mind so I could get things into perspective.

Engineering Programs I was accepted to:
RPI, Drexel, Syracuse, Northeastern, WPI, SUNY Binghamton (Bioengineering)

Non-engineering Programs/Other I was accepted to:
Elon (Dual-Degree Engineering), CUNY (Baruch, Hunter, City College (Non-engineering)), SUNY Buffalo (Non-engineering)

Engineering Programs I am waiting on:
Duke, Cornell, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, University of Rochester, SUNY Stony Brook

I am appealing Syracuse and RPI’s financial aid offer in hopes of better results. I cannot “re-apply” to CUNY community colleges at this point. I did not apply to any engineering programs in CUNY and I do not like City College because it is far away from home on the subway and in a neighborhood I don’t like. The cheapest options in which I got accepted into engineering is Binghamton. I am expecting an acceptance to Stony Brook as well.

I also was considering the male/female ratios again. I do not like that RPI and WPI have less than 30% females. If I decide not to do engineering I may not have many options. I like the schools regardless though. :/

I have been looking more favorably at Northeastern and Syracuse but I didn’t get good aid from them (Over 30K in PLUS a year).

Therefore, I feel that the best option at the moment is SUNY Binghamton until further notice.

Drexel is alright but when I visited I wasn’t feeling it that much. I cannot afford to stay there 5 years for 3 co-ops. I know they have the 4 year co-op option but still…

RPI has better reputation than Drexel on the west coast. Just from the engineering point of view, not financial aid point of view.

I posted this on my other thread and I still need more answers.

I am still trying to figure out which college I am going to based on financial aid. No one responded to my appeal letter yet so I am still surveying people about which college will be a great match for me in general. I want to know from other engineers or people who know about engineering schools where I may have the best experience. I am a female so I don’t know how I would feel at a school where there are hardly any other girls. I want a college with a great engineering program but also a great environment in which I could have a social life.

My options so far are:
SUNY Binghamton (Bioengineering)
WPI
Northeastern
Syracuse
Drexel
RPI

What are your suggestions? (Top 3)

No new responses?

Binghamton or Stony Brook seem to be the only choices you have, if you want to study engineering. I think you would be happier living on campus at Binghamton than Stony Brook, but you should try to visit to determine that for yourself.

City has an engineering program, which you could afford, but you didn’t apply to their engineering program.

Both of my sons were accepted to RPI. Younger S is a RPI Medalist. However, neither did or will attend - RPI doesn’t give good aid. We tried appealing with older son, but to no avail.

I don’t think any of those schools are going to bridge that gap for you either - not substantially.

The cost of attendance at Binghamton is about $18 grand.

You will get a $3500 subsidized loan. You will probably get $2000 unsub. loan too. You might get some TAP. You will probably get work study, but remember you have to still earn that. Since you have been offered scholarships at other schools, you might also get a merit scholarship.

Bottom line, SUNY or CUNY is all you can afford (although if you get into Cornell or Columbia, they meet 100% of need, and are no-loan schools).

You will get a great education, and you will have a blast hugs

I guess you are still waiting for some school’s regular decisions. I really hope that you get into a loan free, need meeting college. If that doesn’t happen, you should go to Binghamton. Bing is an amazing school and it’ll surely cost you a lot less. :)

And what about the appeal you did? Any positive news from the schools where you asked to review your financial aid?

I did not receive any status update on my appeal and I may call to ask if anything changed yet. I am still waiting on University of Rochester, Johns Hopkins, Stony Brook, Columbia, Cornell, and Duke. I feel like aI really want to go to Syracuse. I am going to an event tonight and I may ask them if they have any additional scholarships that I could take advantage of.

Syracuse thought my parents had three rental properties and that is false… o.o I am hoping they will be able to appeal my financial aid package quickly. I boiled down my list to RPI, WPI, Syracuse, and Binghamton. I am obviously leaning towards Syracuse because I realized that it is a great fit for me. RPI keeps lurking in my mind because after all, it is a great engineering school and that is what I want to do. The male and female ratio of the institutes are disappointing. I love the well-roundedness of Syracuse and Binghamton’s curriculum and student body.

I have more great news. RPI revised my aid package and now I only have to pay $16,636 a year! It is comparable to SUNY Binghamton’s cost. WPI is cheaper at about $14000, but I hear that RPI is an overall better school. If Syracuse gives me a better package than that I’ll probably will be sold.

Vloria that is great news!

Thanks I am about to start a fresh thread about how I need a little more help eliminating schools. I change my mind everyday and I want to be convinced that one is better than the rest for me.
