Hello everyone
I was recently accepted into UMD and the scholars program as well as the Clark school for engineering. I got into the engineering school but my major i selected is undecided within engineering. Im really not sure which engineering i should do. I love physics, chem not so much, and i hated bio. But i did take bio freshman year with an awful teacher so i may be bias. I am currently in Calc 1 and am doing pretty well. Knowing that info about me which engineering would you guys recommend? If you have any more questions about me or what i like that you think would influence it, feel free to ask. Any help would be awesome. Thanks!
First off, you don’t need to declare right away. The foundation courses for all the disciplines are pretty standard int he first year. Here is a brief description of the different disciplines available http://www.eng.umd.edu/prospective/ug-majors
FYI, there is a class, ENES 181 that’s offered every fall for freshman engineers and has the following description:
Restriction: Must be in a major in ENGR-A. James Clark School of Engineering; and must be a new freshman or transfer student.
Introduction to Engineering as a Profession, Overview of Martin Institute and Clark School Education and Research Programs, The Future of Engineering and Engineering Education, Basic Technological Literacy, Business and Entrepreneurship Issues for Engineers, the Joy of Discovery, Student Projects: How to get involved, Research and Development Programs: How to get involved, What the corporate sector expects from a new engineering graduate.
There is also a mentoring program and a living learning community for engineers http://www.seeds.umd.edu/programs/virtus My son elected to live with scholar community instead of engineering community, but he knew he wanted MechE from the beginning, so it wasn’t an issue for him.
@maryversity Awesome thank you! I think I am going to live with the scholar community instead of the engineering one. Also, what exactly does the ENES 181 course do/teach?
My son didn’t take that class but I remembered hearing about it from engineering preview program. It’s one credit and the dean of engineering leads it but if I recall correctly I think he brings in a lot of speakers to talk about different aspects of a career in engineering…? The description I pasted from testudo is all I can offer though…
