Which essay topic is better/more unique?

I know that it’s the writing that matters, but I want to choose a topic that is interesting and isn’t overdone. One option is writing about how I balanced schoolwork with helping my mom with my younger siblings and the newborn baby (born the day before the start of junior year), which was like a part-time job. I often wouldn’t get started on homework until about 10 o’clock, and I was (still am) like their second mom.
Another topic I was thinking about was when I moved to the U.S. from Germany when I was 8. I spoke no English and couldn’t understand anything in class and I was incredibly frustrated, but I dedicated myself to learning English and became fluent after a few months.
Again, I know it’s the writing that matters, but I want an interesting topic. If anyone has any good advice I would really appreciate it!

Both topics seem interesting. I personally think the second topic about you moving and not knowing and English is better just because it shows you were always determined ans dedciated and you can relate that how you’ll be in college. However I would write the one you can expand the most upon. What I recommend is to start writing both and then just go with the one you feel really expresses who you are.

It’s important to write about who you are now, so if you choose the one about learning English, it can’t be about your 8 year old self.it can be about how that person shaped who you are now.

Number one makes me wonder whether those issues are still going to be a barrier.

Number two is about you 10 years ago. You’ve got to find a way to make the essay about the you who is applying.
