I’m a National Merit Hispanic Scholar (NMHS?) and I was wondering if Auburn would use my weighted GPA to decide whether or not I got a scholarship? Because the minimum GPA listed on their website for the National Merit scholarships is 3.5, and while my weighted GPA is 3.7, my unweighted is 3.3.

Please and thanks!

Edit: Oh and I know that Alabama got rid of their Hispanic scholarship (but their website doesn’t reflect the changes for 2011 yet). Is Auburn’s website already up to date? Or might they possibly get rid of it too?

Call Auburn to find out about the GPA. I think they take the GPA off of your transcripts, but I know my daughter’s transcripts had three different GPA’s based on three different calculations. One was weighted, one was unweighted and I really don’t know what the third one was but it might have strictly been her high school GPA without the two high school classes she took in middle school. I have no idea which one Auburn used. On her application I think she put down her weighted GPA.

Call your GC and find out how it is reported on your transcript, then call AU. My guess is that it is your weighted IF that is how your transcript reports.

You are NMHS so this would not apply to you, however for others that follow merit scholarships, anything that is based on a SAT score they do NOT superscore for this. For instance, if the SAT M/CR combined level is 1440, that is required in a single test date.

I would bet that it is unweighted GPA. All schools weight differently so some equal standard needs
to be set. I’ve heard of kids even having a 12.0 GPA.

They use whatever GPA your school reports, assuming your school uses a standard 4.0 scale. If your school weights, then they use that. If your school does not weight, then they use that. It may seem unfair, particularly to students whose schools do not weight the GPA, but that is what Auburn does. They do not recalculate your GPA, unless your school uses something besides a 4.0 scale. In that case, Auburn will recalculate your GPA on an unweighted 4.0 scale. We know this from experience. My son’s school used a weighted 7 point scale. His transcript also displayed an unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale. We had to ask his school to recalculate his GPA on a weighted 4.0 scale (similar to the other high schools in our district), specifically to meet Auburn’s scholarship requirements. Without it, he would have not received his scholarship.

I read somewhere that they do recalculate your GPA if you take AP, Honors classes and your school doesn’t offer a weighted GPA.

Here it is:

How does Auburn calculate high school GPA for the purpose of awarding scholarships to incoming freshmen?
The cumulative GPA (weighted or unweighted) indicated on the high school transcript is used in determining eligibility for admission and scholarships, provided the GPA is calculated on a 4.0 scale. Admissions Processing will automatically recalculate the GPA if it is not provided on a 4.0 scale or if a weighted GPA is not provided and the student course work includes Advanced Placement, IB, Honors, and/or Gifted courses.
