Kappa Kappa Gamma or PhiDE ?
I know KKG is a social sorority and PhiDE is a medical fraternity.
I like both of these organziations very much, I was just wondering which would look better.
here’s some background.
I am going to be a sophmore, I have a 3.6 and will have about 200 hours of hospital volunteering by the end of the year, and about 120 by the end of august. I also have about 300 hours of hospital volunteering done from when i was in highschool.
I am an International student.
I have also shadowed an international doctor and worked in a clinic for about 2 months.
Unfortunately I havent been able to get socially involved on my campus, so I figured joining greek life would be the best way to make contacts and friends at the same time.
suggestions ?
Hard to say. First for Pan Hellenic recruitment it is very competitive especially at large Greek life schools. Before you make this decision try and see if they offer you a bid. I’m involved in a social fraternity and it’s arguably opened as much if not more doors then a professional one could. Social sororities are expensive so make sure you can pay for their dues. Also looking better for Med school would not apply here. Volunteering will do this because you want to do it for yourself. KKG will see right through you if you just want it for a resume booster.
Can you do both? Some schools allow you to do both. Professionally, of course, PhiDE will help you with being pre-med and pursuing a career in medicine. KKG is a social sorority, so obviously it is going to have a different feel than a pre-professional fraternity. Also, if you plan on going through rush for Panhellenic recruitment, why are you searching out KKG? The point of rush is to find the place you feel at home. Pre-professional fraternities are different because they have specific ones for pre-law, business, etc. I would agree with @10s4life statement that social fraternities typically open more doors for people.
@10s4life Greek life is not that big on my campus. @rvalover7 I’m searching out KKG because I know some girls who are in it and they’re all wonderful. I didn’t rush the first year because, like I said I’m an international student and I was still adjusting to the cultural differences and the entirely new education platform. I know that greek life is a serious commitment so I did nit want to overwhelm myself such that my academics would suffer.
i want to rush regardless of the med school aspect. I just wanted to get opinions on which one would be more beneficial. As an international student, I already come in at a disadvantage because there I limitations to what I can do outside of school and med- schools where
i can apply. so all I’m trying to do is become as increase and improve my chances.
Understandable, just saying it’s better to go in with an open mind. Can you do both?
I don’t think either will specifically help for med school except to the extent they make you a better person, help with your undergrad studies, help you be happy.
Does the PhiDE have a social aspect to it? My daughter is in a social sorority and a professional (engineering) fraternity. Plenty of time for both.
You’re right. Thank you for your input
@twoinanddone
I’m not sure if it does. I know they exist on our college campus, but I’m not really familiar with their presence on campus. But I’ll surely look into it.
I would say rush a social sorority and don’t do the professional one. Most people going to Med school aren’t in any sort of Greek life anyways. You’ll have more fun in a social one.
Never heard of Phi Delta Epsilon. The only “medical fraternity” I know is Alpha Omega Alpha which is the honor society you get into as a medical student (think Phi Beta Kappa for med students).
I was in a traditional NIC fraternity and I have classmates who were in other NICs, NPCs, and NPHCs.
As an international the deck is already so stacked against you that frankly your membership in neither, either, or both probably won’t matter.
